Problems with Santander Debit cards
Discussion
I'm having problems with Santander debit cards, second card in two months. The first one was rejected by a couple of retailers in April and I was told it was a problem with the chip. After a lot of faffing around on their part trying to deliver a new card to me I finally received it a few weeks later. This one has only worked about for three or four weeks and has been rejected by three or four retailers, this despite one trying to key the details manually. Santander insisted there wasn't a problem until I raised an official complaint and they agreed to send a new card. In the meantime they told me I could withdraw cash on the old card at ATMs as they read the magnetic strip rather than the chip. Forward to yesterday and the card was retained by the machine when I tried to get some cash. I've never had any problems with other banks cards and I even have a Mastercard that is broken down the middle, partly across the chip, that still works.
Has anyone else had issues with Santander and their cards or am I just the unlucky bd? BTW account is in good funds with more than enough to cover what I was trying to purchase.

Because Santander.
My wife wife made several attempts to have a card / account changed to her married name including at one stage them insisting they wouldn't cancel the card until a new one arrived.
We went away for a few days, she tried to withdraw cash, the machine declined it.
Luckily the branch was open (and trusting) and she was able to get cash that way.
Eventually they sent her a card with her married name on it.
And the prefix, "Miss"

Hi,
I've had a whole string of Santander Visa Debit cards that will not allow withdrawal from any Link ATM. I mean...some take the card in and spit it out in disgust, others just plain won't allow it to pass in the first place. I've seen other people using the same ATM in front of me with no problems (although I don't know what cards they had). Near me, there are two Yorkshire Bank ATMs, two Nat West ATMs, another of uncdertain ownership on a wall at Sainsbury's and - get this - two Santander ATMS - NONE of which will let my card operate at all; won't even ask for a PIN, any of them.
I had one card of the same kind for almost four years...the poor thing was at the end of its days when it stopped working properly so they issued a new one. That wouldn't work. They issued me a third....same ole same ole....and then a fourth, with a new number and everything. No joy.
I called into branches and while they sorted the cash withdrawal out, there was no answer as to why the card/s wouldn't work - "Maybe we've just had a bad batch of cards" was the best they offered me. At this point, too, their app was going AWOL all the time so all of this was a real inconvenience. All of this has gone on over a period of perhaps 14 months now.
I have just come off the phone now with them, and they say once again they will issue me a new card - the guy said he couldn't see a reason why the previous cards shouldn't operate in the other ATMs. My account is in order and no blocks are present. I asked at that point how a new card was likely to be different from the its predecessors, to which he replied that he was issuing a different kind of card. Oh yes?, I said. What's the difference? He said that what I have is a Bank Giro Card, and he was sending me a visa Debit Card.
Hm. ALL of the cards I have had this issue with have Visa Debit on them. NOt Bank Giro. Visa Debit. I told him so. He said, No, what you have is a Bank Giro Card. I will send you a Visa Debit. And how is it different, I asked.....he said...well...I just can't see a reason why the one you have isn;t working, so we'll try this.
So now I'm going to see what transpires with the REAL Visa Debit as opposed to the Visa Debit impersonators I have been issued before.
And for info....the Santander App in its newest form won't operate on a rooted phone, so I can't use that either.j
Methinks it may be time to consider some other banking destitution
