I never knew atm's were running a Windows OS!

YES, the bugger threw up a runtime error dialogue box just after I asked for my £30, then promptly rebooted to a Windows XP screen. So now no cash and no card.

Speaking to Santander it's a £25 charge to use the Visa facility of being given a unique code to access an atm to withdraw cash!

Is that correct given what happened, ie not my fault at all?

Was it a Santander cashpoint? If not, would you say it's fair that they pay for someone else's stty cash machine...?

Can you get your 30 quid another way, ie borrow off a mate til Monday? smile

The card will be property of the bank, so although a pain in the arse, tough really.

Is that £25 to use a santander machine without a card?

Seems odd Natwest offer it for nothing, even just forgetting your card, you can use the mobile app to generate a code which you can use to get cash. (Granted its only at Natwest/RBS machines)

I've just read through the description of the android Santander app and as far as I can tell it doesn't offer that functionality. I'll give them another call later and see if talking to a different automaton yields a different answer.

Nope. Santander are saying I'm stuffed until Monday morning. Bad timing for this to happen at the weekend!

Looking at your garage, I'm surprised you haven't got access to more than £30. I'm just west of London so if you want to pop over in the morning in one of the cars I'll lend you the £30 smile

All the major ATMs out there run on windows. Many are at least 10 years old and so XP is v commonplace. Should make no odds under normal circumstances though!!

Do you not have a credit card? Most of them allow cash withdrawals.

True but at severe charges that are usually applied immediately.

I really do not understand why the likes of ATMs run windoze, every installation carries a licence fee and it's utterly unreliable ste. Stick it on a reliable Linux kernel and save a lot of money and trouble.

Think mine charges a couple of quid, not cheap, but then again not over the top if it gets you out of the smelly stuff.

Because commercial deal and probably requires fewer windows techs on the payroll than it would require Linux techs. The OS is not the least reliable part of any ATM network either.
