Mainly down to most places not accepting them due to the large number of counterfeits.
I understand that the £20 note is the highest counterfeit note?one might question the logic of the 500Euro note - even the twits in Brussels should have realised it was going to become the criminals choice of currency?

In safes or under mattresses?
that reminds me of a tale from an 'undertaker' I know - collects bodies where crime is not suspectedwent to a house and thousands of cash was under the mattress - unfortunately the deceased died in bed and the notes were ruined due to body fluids!

I would imagine they are the least likely to be counterfeited because every time you hand one over, they get tested with 2-3 pens and the manager called for a look too. It's the one note that always attracts attention.
As I understand it, shops don't like them as they cannot give them back as "change" and they are charged for taking them into the bank.
They aren't often forged as people are so wary of any £50 note more co than a 10 or 20.
Personally, if you want to carry cash, a few £50's take up less room in your wallet.
my wallet however is usually full of credit card receipts.

We got some for a French colleague some years ago and he nearly had a baby - he said they're basically unusable, no-one will take them except banks and you get the 3rd degree on where you got them etc.Sheepshanks said:

I doubt that there are many counterfeit £50 notes in circulation as they are harder to forge than the other banknotes due to an additional security feature and people generally pay more attention to checking them.I suspect that the reason you don't see them so often is that the extra security feature makes them more expensive for the Bank of England to produce (or rather De La Rue to produce for the BoE).

If shops don't take them for this reason then the largest note they will typically take will be the £20 note. So why are they taking the £20 note as they'll never be able to use it for change either alock said:

Go in to a pub on a Friday afternoon. All the tradesmen will have them.
This, I have lots of trades client and they'll usually pay cash, often in £50s. Rarer to get £100s but it is known.I paid for my car in £50s so there's plenty of them around. It's just that a lot of places won't take them. But if they don't want my money...
