Ive been using Quicken 2002 for homw finances for pretty ever, and Id be lost without it.

Intuit abandoned the UK a few years for some strange reason. I think some people use Quicken 2012 or similar, byt that has Dollar set as default. Im led to believe that can changed, and that version "should" be ok later OS.

It looks likely that it may not run on WIN10 and onwards and that concerns me greatly.

A google suggests that there isnt really mnay alternatives out there, and TBH, I would rather stay with Quicken as I know how it works.

I know some will suggest an Excel set up, but Ive no experience using that software really.

Others may suggest a VM running Winxx, but Im not sure Im tech enough to do that.

Any suggestions for going forward ? My Pc will need replacemene pretty soon and Im concerned about my financial controls.

TBH if it's straightforward stuff then Excel is the way to go.

My suggestion would be to have a look on Amazon and buy one of the "Excel for Dummies" books for a few ££. Once you start doing spreadsheets they become infectious and next thing you know you've got a spreadsheet for everything!

What is the particular stuff you are trying to do?

Purely general day to day finances - DD's etc and bank reconciliations.

QuickBooks is made by the same people as Quicken and will certainly do that for you - at a price. But really, you'd be using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

The key to easy personal finance is IMO to run two bank accounts,
  • Pay (say, £1,500 per month) goes into one account
  • Set up an automatic monthly transfer from that first account to the second account, say £1,000 per month
  • All DDs and all routine spending (food, petrol etc) hit the second account
  • Let the salary account build up for use on one-offs like holiday, new car, house repair.
This approach, combined with some very simple Excel, should sort out any household.

Very close to what we do - except in reverse. All day to day stuff comes out of the current account but we pay a lump into a savings account monthly and that get used for surprise bills etc whilst building up nicely.

I guess ive got used to the way it all runs in Quicken and dont want to change really.

There's a (free) twilight version of microsoft money available which is very similar and I think will import quicken backups.

No idea if it works on win 10 but does on win 8.1

It does, but it may need some 'fixes' applied to Windows, which seem to keep changing as the Windows 10 updates roll out, so best to google for the current situation.

I'm running an even older version of Quicken. I can't remember the exact date but it's definitely from last century. A year or so ago I upgraded my computer to one running Windows 7 and it wouldn't touch it. I found there was some sort of XP virtual machine built into Win7 though, so I fired that up and my Ye Olde Quicken is still working fine in it to this day.

I'll check which version we have in the morning. Think it's 2004.

Was using mine a bit earlier and thought I'd check the version - Quicken 3 (for Windows!) (c) 1994. Still going strong 22 years later.
