A letter from the tax office, a statement and a page of information - detailing exactly how much tax I have to pay and when (self assessment).

The only tiny detail they've omitted is how to actually pay it!

So I call them - automated system, directs me to a web page.

Type it in - page doesn't exist.

Search for page. It gives two possible accounts - says my letter will tell me which one - nope.

Call again - all our lines are bisy, can't help, goodbye.

FFS! banghead

Is it really too much to ask that a statement detailing what you need to pay also includes the information of where to pay it to?

It's usually not that hard.

How about this page?

https://www.gov.uk/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill/ba...

Is this the first you've ever had to make a Self Assessment tax payment?

Have you received any sort of payslip at any point in connection with your self assessment tax affairs (usually shown on what HMRC refer to as a Statement of Account)?

If you have, the payment details are shown on the payslip.

Yup, that's the page I eventually found.

Account details to use
Sort code Account number Account name
08 32 10 12001039 HMRC Cumbernauld
08 32 10 12001020 HMRC Shipley

Your bill will tell you which account to pay in to. If you don’t have a bill, or you’re not sure, use HMRC Cumbernauld.

I'll use the Cumbernauld one.

Why send a fking statement out requesting money with no bank details on though? Ludicrous.

Was there a payslip attached?

Nope. A letter and a statement.

This has come about because I lose a major client late 2014 so downgraded what I expected to earn in 2015/16 so as not to pay too much tax on account in January 16.

Having got to the end of the 2015/16 tax year, I had a better year than expected so am trying (via my accountant) to 'top it up'. In response the tax office has sent me a letter and a statement.

That said, I don't even know what I'm supposed to be paying as it doesn't make clear whether the final amount due includes the amount I have already paid in January or not.

HATE all this stuff. Don't mind paying it, just need to know how much and where to. Shouldn't be this complicated. Need to speak to my accountant again...

Aha - you didn't follow the correct procedure.

What you SHOULD have done is submitted a Form SA303 - which is the form which allows you to Apply to Reduce the Payments on Account. Now, you obviously had applied to reduce the 2015/16 Payments on Account previously.

What you should have done was submit a NEW SA303 applying to reduce the Payments on Account again - only this time to a higher amount than the previous application to reduce What you would really be doing is applying to INCREASE the Payments on Account back to a more correct level - but they don't have a form for "Increasing the Payments on Account".

Once the amended Form SA303 had been submitted, HMRC would issue a revised Statement of Account and this should have a payslip attached.

Ahh, now that's interesting. On the statement there are two 'Claim to reduce on...' lines, the second being 21 April. Which did confuse me. You've just explained why that is.

So looks like my accountant did do that (I don't do any of it - hateful business. I just pay it. When I can figure out who to pay and how much).

Definitely no paying in slip though...

I'm puzzled why you aren't asking your accountant for help in where to make payment rather than posting on here!

A fair question. Because he only works one day a week - and ironically it was yesterday, so have to wait a week before I can contact him.

That's rather inconvenient. What is he/she doing the other six days?

I think he's basically retired but does a day a week for a bit of interest/pocket money. Nice chap, used him for years and he isn't dear so not inclined to change.

Meanwhile, I emailed his office and someone phoned me and clarified the situation so we're all good and I've just paid it.

Phew.

HMRC are a wondrous organisation indeed. I've been away for a bit, so have only just opened a few month's worth of letters.

Letters from HMRC:
January: You owe us £1,800 because you didn't pay enough tax in 14/15. We're adjusting your personal allowance for 16/17 to compensate.
18th Feb: We're writing to tell you you owe us £5,100. We'll write to you soon to tell you ways to pay.
21st Feb: We recently wrote to you to tell you you owe us £2,900. A form is attached with details of how you can pay.

I ring them.
"Hello HMRC. Do I need to pay you anything? If so, how much?"
"Well sir, you owe us £3,300"
"Interesting. Are you sure?"
"One second sir....ah actually it's £2,200, minus the amount we're reclaiming through the personal allowance adjustment. So £400."

HMRC random number generator strikes again.

glad it's not just me...

won't go into the (lengthy and boring ) details, but I've been getting on average 3 letters a week for the past 6 weeks from HMRCall with differing amounts of Corporation tax that my co needs to pay !
When I call them up, they can't even explain it. And each time I call I get a different answer
I despair...

Can't your accountant not explain it to you?
