I'd like to ditch my current credit card company (Tesco CC) and try a new one. Who is the best alternative at the moment? I don't want any annual fees and some rewards for using the thing would be nice, but not essential.

Amex Platinum? I use the cashback card for pretty much everything. The only pain is that you have to have another card for those occasions when someone won't accept Amex. Take a look on MoneySavingExpert for best rewards credit cards.

When Natwest stopped offering rewards I went to a Virgin (MBNA) card which adds to my airmiles, seems fine so far.

How long can points/miles roll over for with the white Virgin MBNA card? Any idea?

As far as I know you can keep accruing Virgin miles as long as they are topped up at least once every 3 years. So with the credit card mine are getting topped up each month.

If you use John Lewis their Partnership card is good as long as you pay off every month. You collect points and then get sent vouchers every quarter.

Correct, everytime your flying club has airmiles added to it the clock gets reset to 3 years from date of last addition.
