We are thinking of honeymooning in Venice in October and maybe driving into the Italian lakes for a few day after. Problem is we are looking for somewhere around £100-£150 a night. Can anyone suggest anywhere?

I have seen lots of hotels and B&Bs in budget even a few boats, but you can't beat a piston heads recommendation.

Happy to be shot down, but I'd only do 1-2 days max in Venice. I'm not sure if you were planning longer than that? I'd definitely do the driving part, but consider spending more time somewhere like Florence.

No not at all, that's what we had in mind really. Fly in late afternoon stop the night, have a full day then leave lunchtime the next day.

We stayed here last November - lovely hotel and there was a deal on.

We didn't want our hotel to be near San Marco so we travelled in by water taxi or just walked in.

Just back from Venice myself.

Upon PH recommendations, we stayed at the Domina Hotel on the island of Giudecca.

Would go there again, and would always try to stay on the island rather than San Marco or locale.

I disagree with the prior comments. Wife and I just back from 5 nights in Siena and 5 nights in Florence. Siena was great but Florence was frankly over run with tourists mainly oriental or east European which spoilt it for us, having been several years ago and wanted to return.

Venice is great, spent a week there several years ago. Lots to do in the centre and get out to the islands by ferry. Also very busy but just less crowded and more peaceful than Florence recently.

Given that you are flying into Venice initially, do you need to hire a car? You can get to Lake Garda (Desenzano) in 1h 30m (recommend stopping off in Verona on the way) on the train, or Como is 3h 25m.

It's only €9 a day for a fiat 500. Plus I don't think I could cope with that much public transport.
I like the idea of driving around from little village to village.

In my experience driving is not the problem anywhere in Italy, it's the parking. Good luck!

I'd have to disagree, maybe not in October, but driving around Amalfi in July is not recommended! (Parking is impossible too, of course! biggrin)

This may or may not be useful to you but for me and the missus our main holiday is a european roadtrip in the summer for 2 weeks.

We don't book anywhere. We have an idea of what we want to do and where we want to go and at the end of each day when I've had enough of driving, we look around for a hotel wherever we happen to be.

Even in the summer we've only been turned away from a fully booked place a handful of times so October shouldn't be a problem at all.

Depends if you want a base to work from but although my missus hated the idea of not booking beforehand she now hates holidaying the "regular" way by booking in advance and being tied to one place for multiple days.

Marcoc,

Driving around the Amalfi area anytime of the year is "interesting" (been there three times) but parking anywhere in Italy is always the big issue.

I can't offer any advice but just wanted to thank you for the funniest typo of the year so far.
Honkymoon. Seems somehow so much more apt laugh

We had our honkymoon in Venice. We stayed at the Hotel Pannorama on the Lido. It is basic but clean and friendly staff. Got a nice roof terrace that looks out across the lagoon and entrance to the grand canal.

It isn't startling but fits your budget. We spend extra on business class flights and saved the money to spend out and about.

The restaurants on the Lido are cheaper.

Well to answer my own question, can't really recommend the Westin Europa and Regina.

"Striking rooms & suites in an opulent 5 star hotel featuring upscale dining, 2 bars & Grand Canal views."

Unless it's your honeymoon, then you get wall view! But that's ok because they give you a complimentary bottle of fizz and a little nots saying thank you for choosing us for your honeymoon. Anyway it's your honeymoon you spend it mostly in bed not looking at the view out of the window. ;-)

Separate beds!

FML
Went down and asked nicely why we are in a twin and got told they are fully booked.

Wife of 1 day now fast asleep out of arms reach, and I'm on PH complaining about the hotel. :-(

We were at the Westin Europa and our suite was fantastic.

Mind you, we did arrive on the Orient Express, so they knew we was players

Gutted doesn't cut it! It's such a disappointment my wife was putting a brave face on but it's hart renching when it's the first night of your honeymoon and you feel like you have let her down, and worse when your paying a fortune for a 5* hotel and you have had better rooms in a Travelodge.
The room is shabby and run down, one bulb is out, one wall light thing is broken, it's so hot I'm melting even though the air con is on full blast and it sounds like the staff lift is on the other side of the headboard.

Go to reception. Ask for the manager. Explain why you are unhappy: ask him/her what they are going to do about it? Know what you want. Don't settle for a discount voucher for your next trip. If they can do nothing explain that you will not be paying a 5* bill for a 0* experience.
