Moneybox Live (R4 Wednesday) had a head-to-head debate on the subject of pension vs property, and champions for both. Might be worth digging out. And there are of course numerous other options.
Comparing a product wrapper and an asset class - should be interesting...
It's amazing that some people still don't get this....

Thanks for the replies all.

I'm not a higher rate taxpayer now - as I mentioned we both work through a ltd company and only pay ourselves what we need. Some of whats left goes into pensions but the rest is just sitting there earning close to nothing.

I've not hit the `£1M limit yet - the focus the last couple of years has been to boost the other half's pension so we can optimise our future tax position (can I still say that or is that now a form of tax avoidance?).

Once we do get to retirement then in my mind we want a good mix of pension income (taxable) and ISA type (i.e. non-taxable) income.

So get into pension while you can enjoy a shed-load of tax relief one way or another!

Your basic thinking in the previous post seems eminently sensible. You and the OH have plenty of scope here.

By the way "Avoidance" is fine. "Evasion", or stealing from the tax man, is criminal. Avoid.

Every Sunday the Times asks "Which is better, property or a pension?" - and does she have to shout so much!!!

How about "property held within a pension - if property does well". Or "[insert any other asset class here] within a pension"?

As you say, one is a tax wrapper and one is an asset class...

Yeah....I reckon Julian that the >real< question is whether investments allowable within a pension wrapper are as advantageous as those not allowed within the same wrapper.

Residential Property is the elephant in the room.

I have had a decent return on commercial property INSIDE OF a pension wrapper - I appreciate residential land can be held in a pension wrapper but only up to planning stage.

Apologies to Simpo for the perception of disagreement. My only gripe was with the title of the radio show beer

Mine too!

Having said that, it's hard to beat a leveraged exposure to an asset class that rarely goes down!

Indeed.

Remember what they say about past history being an indicator of future returns...... wink
