Hi all, a quick question.

I suspect this is a foolish question, so please be kind! I am looking to have a new driveway installed at my house (circa £5k), and would like to just put this on a credit card.

However, almost no builders have a faciltiy to accept a card payment. Is there some easy way of being able to pay for some work of this nature to someone who cannot accept a card payment? I expect I have just answered my own question there, but I thought I would check.

Most credit cards charge heavily for drawing out cash on them etc, which seems to rule out that. I'm just not sure if there is some method I have missed.

Any comments appreciated.

First question- why?

If to spread payments then you're almost certainly better off with a loan (unless on a 0% deal but requires someone who can take it which is limited as you've found).

Depending on how much you spend month to month, put all spending on the credit card and save up the cash?

Hi, thanks for the feedback.

The idea of using a credit card would have been to get a new one with 0% on purchases (hence the question about how to pay a builder!) - otherwise a loan would doubtless be a cheaper way of borrowing.

I have seen a Virgin card with money transfer with 0% for 32 months and a fee of only 1.69% which would actually be cheaper than an equivalent loan, so may look at that in more detail.

Again, thanks for the constructive comments.

You could potentially send it via paypal (or similar) with a credit card.

However the builder will almost certainly expect you to pay the fee!

Im constantly getting letters/junk from both Tesco and Virgin for credit card to bank transfer deals (0% for 12 months etc) so that would possibly be better.

Virgin Money have a card which offers 0% over 36 months and you can use this offer with a cash transfer meaning you can pay the builder in cash, but spread the payments smile
