I lent an old pal an immaculate Space Invaders machine, totally original and in a 9.5/10 condition.

He wanted it for his new conservatory, a kind of focal point if you like.

I prodded him a few times about getting it returned after 12 months or so, eventually he gave me an envelope with £250 in it, he'd managed to sell it for me.

Firstly, I didn't want to sell it, I used to come across stuff like this all the time in my old business and I only ever kept the very nicest machines that I came across.

Secondly, if I sold it to a collector I'd probably have gotten £1500ish and possibly more if I tried on Ebay.

I'm not sure what was going through his head at the time, we didn't speak a great deal after that, he thought I was being a bit dramatic.

They always do.

I had an old woodburner sitting in my garage for a few years whilst we were looking for a bigger house which it was intended we would put it in or at least that we could put it into a large garage/shed to give some winter warmth. A friend a good few miles away needed a new woodburner as their own had split and it was their main source of heating for the house. So i gave it to them. Once they got it home they decided that it wasn't really for them so sold it and used the cash to put towards the new one they bought. Sorry to seem pathetic but to me that's just not cricket. Okay so i gave it to them to use, not to sell on and pocket the cash - which i could have done at any time for many years rather than have it take up space in the garage...

Who needs friends like those. Sound like the type of people who would let their dog st on your lawn and do nothing about it and pull out of junctions without looking.

Typical PH response. Powerfully built director stuff.
i don't think i understand that either. You don't make sense.

Why would your brother asking to borrow some money necessitate you telling him to fk off? With no background given that just sounds a bit harsh, and a bit mean? You tacked on the bit at the end of him starting a new job - why does that mean all of a sudden he's rolling in cash? That assumption makes you seem bitter too? Emergency dental treatment can be a lot of money, and the word emergency suggests it's required in quite a short space of time. If you're assuming he's lying than that's another thing entirely, but again you've not said that. I wanted to say you sounded a bit of a dhead, but instead i prompted you by saying i don't follow the logic in your post. Then you came back with a dhead response, instead of explaining it.

My best mate from school borrowed a significant amount of money from another good mate probably getting on for 20 years ago. Said best mate from school then buggered off to live on the other side of the planet, and still hasn't paid him back. Weirdly the lad he borrowed the money off doesn't hold it against him!

Same lad borrowed me a smaller sum and I paid him back ASAP.

Surely a real mate would always pay you back. Just goes to show how morally (as well as financially) bankrupt most people are.

Another one in this chain. I had a spare vivarium in my room at work, one of the lads wanted to get a snake so I offered him that as it was just sitting there. A couple of days later I was walking past the bins and there it was, dumped to be taken away by the bin men. If he decided he didn't want it why couldn't he see if I wanted it back?

Organised a holiday for 21 people to Thailand last year, motobiking round the Mae Hong Son loop etc. etc.

2 weeks before we went, one guy ( a friend since 1973) came around and said he couldn't afford to go. I lent him £1000 to make it happen. This was in September last year.

On the holiday, I ended up laying out an average of £150 per person for flights / taxis and the like. This lads brother is the last one to pay up, 6 months ago now !

I know I'll get the £1,000 back eventually, but the lad who owes me the £150 is using it to fund his drug dealing, which really pisses me off. He's working full time, plus his extra source of income, but gives me a sob story every time I remind him..

Well, because he started a new job 3 months ago so would've been paid at least twice by now. He lives off radar with a nutcase of a partner who probably gets more in benefits then what the average person earns full time (she wouldn't be entitled to all this benefit if she declared him living there you see). He has zero debt - no mortgage, no c.cards, loan etc and is out getting pissed virtually every night and still asks for money??

Yes, I told him to fk off smile

P.S - I didn't come back with a dhead reply wink

I think I'd rather know he still had it than it being stored in a damp shed somewhere.

Or worse, smashed up into match sticks.

I really can't believe some peoples' attitude to borrowing money.

If a friend lends you money it is then your responsibility to pay him/her back asap. Your friend should never have to ask for it and if you can't you have a duty to tell your mate that you can't and why and when you will get it back to him. Anything else is pi55taking IMO.

I guess the only debate for me is at what value is it ok not to mention it again. If someone lends me 10p for whatever reason I would try to give it back when I had it (no one has ever taken that sort of amount and it feels a bit weird doing it but It just feels weird not at least trying to give it back). If you lent a mate a fiver and he never mentioned it again would it not irk you a bit?

For me, it's not the sum of money that's important. If someone asks to borrow anything, then I expect it back. If they ask me to give them something, it's a different story.

I've learnt to write off any money I lend to people

My neighbour knocked on my door at 1am a couple months ago saying her father in law had been taken to hospital an she doesn't have any money for a taxi, said she would pay me back on Monday, I gave her £20.
It's been 2 months and no money, she's really trying to avoid me as well she took a complete detour when she saw me waiting for the lift the other day.

I just remembered a corking tale.

A few years ago my brother was married to his now thankfully ex wife. Her parents were dead pushy and long story short basically forced them to buy a great big detached house. They had no savings and this was post 08 so the banks wanted 50k deposit. Her parents gifted them 50k saying it was advanced inheritance or whatever.

The week after they moved in que pushy parents come round with a repayment schedule! Changed their minds apparently. It caused great strain and they were separated within 12 months. She still lives in the house and at age 32 her parents get her wages paid directly to them and they give their daughter pocket money after they pay the (huge) mortgage and bills. They are all a set of complete lunatics and our kid was well out of it. He walked away from 200k plus of debt for 18k just because the pushy parents wanted to hide the failure of the marriage from their friends. Batst crazy.

The thing that I don't understand.

If you are broke, why would you want to be keeping snakes and/or other reptiles.

Surely, you would be looking to economise on things, not buy things you don't need?
