It's a few years ago but I remember having a bit of hassle when I got to a certain level of transactions through PayPal and they wanted me to prove my identity. I'd bought something on eBay that took it over the limit and it took about a week to sort out, with the seller getting increasingly agitated.
It's easy enough to verify these days and it's pretty clearly explained on PayPal in all fairness...

I've sent him a message to say that it has to be paid by PayPal
and if he can't do that, I'm happy to cancel the sale.

It does sometimes seem a bit "tinfoil hat" but i have been shafted a few times with scammers, personally and my business. Its just not worth the risk.

I have had a cheque clear before and sent an item, 3 days later the money gets taken back out of my account. I will never accept a cheque for any payment for any amount now. When bank transfer is much quicker and easier you have to ask why are people using cheques.

Anyone using a cheque other than businesses is a scammer in my eyes. Tell him to Paypal you like it told them to.

Ref giving bank details out to strangers they can set direct debits up in your name no problem to charities. that is with just account number and sort code.
Bit harsh, not everyone has a Paypal account. The older generation are far more used to and trusting of cheques.

And that is why many elderly people get scammed. They assume once a cheque clears it is ok when this is not the case.

And the scammers have become VERY clever at conning people out of their money...

I sold something on ebay (not a particularly valuable item) recently and the buyer messaged me to say that he wanted to pay by cheque. I immediately though "scammer, no way" but then I thought, well, if that's how he wants to pay and he can be bothered to write and post a cheque then so be it. Anyway, the cheque cleared and I sent the item. That was it. No scam, just some dude who wanted to pay by cheque.

He could have been banned from paypal, or he could have hated paypal or he just simply liked cheques. Who knows.

Paypal every time, unless item is being collected, in which case insist on cash - this is recommended by ebay.
Very easy to get your paypal account emptied because the guy that came and collected that stuff claimed it 'never arrived'.

Yep, NEVER take PayPal for something someone collects!

Are you sure it's not a PayPal E-Cheque, I've had this a couple of times and never had an issue, I don't know what triggers it, but sometimes it happens.

I've received a PP payment, there seems to be a plausible explanation
which I won't go into now, but if I do end up being scammed I'll tell you
all, and you can have a laugh at my expense biggrin.
BTW my item is eligible for Seller Protection.

"Seller Protection" im not sure if this is a little joke between ebay staff. It doesnt really mean anything.

I sell on ebay/amazon for a living so seen most of the tricks. Good luck though!

I sold a relatively high value item on eBay last month. £1k trailer. Not being a regular seller I didn't read too much into the whole fees/PayPal t's and c's. So buyer paid by Paypal which cost me £35 or something then they hold on to the money for 21 days before releasing it. All to protect the buyer. On top of the eBay listing fees it became quite an expensive way of selling the trailer. Still haven't got my cash either.....
