Car Insurance Providers
Discussion
I've been with Admiral for around 10 years, looking to move elsewhere now.
Would appreciate peoples thoughts on which companies are good and which to avoid.
Many thanks in advance
[EDIT]
I've just got quoted from Confused.com - and providers such as 'Quote Me Happy' and 'Sure Thing' are quote cheap. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Admiral are expensive
Are you a particularly high risk? I have always found Admiral to be among the cheapest, particularly after a bit of negotiation.Admiral are expensive

Just use comparison sites. Asking such a vague question here is a waste of time as there are an infinite number of answers depending on everything from your car to your age to your job to your location, to name but a few. I'm not sure what you're expecting to achieve here. Two people have said "Admiral have been good for me" so go with them. Oh, they're too expensive you say? Well that just proves my point above. What's good for one doesn't mean it's good for another. Insurance comparison sites -------->Would appreciate peoples thoughts on which companies are good and which to avoid.

Comparison websites are IMHO are not about insurance, they are all about price, which is in many ways the least important issue when thinking of insurance. They never show the full details of the cover they provide, ie they do not show what they do not cover. You need to work out precisely the cover you want and don't need and then start getting quotes. It's amazing the vast differences between the insurers as regards the cover they do/do not provide as part of their standard policy.

You might want to try opening your eyes as all the details are there if you click on the quote. Likewise, before you even get to that part they ask you what cover you want and you can adjust the excess as you wish and have the figure recalculated for you. I can only assume you've never used an insurance comparison site as none of what you've said happens.
Do they give you full details about their cover when abroad? No, they only ensure you get what's legally required in the country you are going to, they don't automatically extend fully comp when abroad and many make a significant charge for this for which you have to enquire about separately Do they cover windscreen breakage when abroad? No, they say repairs are too expensive abroad.
Just a couple of examples that you don't discover from comparison sites.

Those are pretty extreme examples. For the vast majority of people using comparison sites these items are of no real consequence. Just a couple of examples that you don't discover from comparison sites.

Taking your car abroad is a big decision. It would be prudent to talk to your insurer at that time and fully understand what is covered. If necessary, purchase an add on.
jockman,
If you look at the Le Mans pages you'll see there has been a lot of chat about cover while abroad and there's plenty of PHers who were unaware that their UK comprehensive cover etc may not automatically be extended when abroad. About 100,000 Brits got to Le Mans each year so that must mean somewhere between 20,000-50,000 vehicles. Then there are far more other Brits who holiday abroad with their car. I do not think the examples I used were in any way extreme.
The real problem is that comparison website ask for full details about the owner/driver and full details about the vehicle but sod all about the cover required so enquirers just assume that what they sign up for UK use applies equally abroad, which is not always the case.

Fair point mon ami.
When I was tempted to take the old DB9 on the Le Mans trip with the usual crew I was securely ensconced with Locktons who offered pretty decent Euro cover via Chubb. I've also used Hiscox in the past, primarily for the DBS.
Outside of those occasions I've always found general insurers on supermarket sites to be adequate.
The devil is in the detail. Insurance is a risk-based game. If you increase that risk in any way be sure to check your cover thoroughly.
