Cheers guys set my first buy for tomorrow when the market opens. Always meant to reinvest shares from my old employers in apple and vale a few years ago but money went on a house instead. Would have double my cash if I'd have invested in them when planned too. Ah well got the house for a good price anyway haha
In 2008, after the crash/crunch, I was chatting with a colleague and casually mentioned that I should put an amount of money in "the FTSE". I think it was at 3700-3800 or similar back then.

I used the money for a house deposit in 2009. I broke even on the house when I sold it. Gutted!

Anyway, it's great to look back (not), doesn't do you any good.

Yeah I'd say hopefully atm my house has gone up in value by a fair percentage of what I'd have got back from the shares so all is not lost.

Wanted to pile into BP shares after the oil spill too, just didn't have the coil at the time would have made a few quid there too. Life's a learning experience....

Good write up on QFI yesterday by Seeking Alpha. Some very pie in the sky figures in it (such as the maths that would mean the share price hitting £150!!), but it is comforting to see a relatively well regarded name getting on side.

It's my lads 1st birthday next week, so we're 'putting aside' a little chunk of my QFI shares into my wifes ISA as an investment for him for when he's 18 (if we do a good job of it and he's not a nob!). My portfolio is now 90% QFI and a couple of dabblers. Not fantastic practise, but if it hit 1% of the (ludicrous) £150 figure in this article, I'm 1 very large step closer to retirement by 40....!

I can but wish!

If you trade backwards you'll eat yourself up. As long as the logic makes sense now then you did the right thing then. If it doesnt make sense now then learn from it.

I can think of plenty of trades which have costs me thousands, but the logic makes sense. You take a risk, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesnt.

Wonder if buy the dip is going to work this time. Have tried getting net short 4 or 5 times now each time hasn't been that great, but I'm net short again.

Hi all,

Is it worth investing 100 quid in buying shares? With the trade price of a tenner the shares would have to go up 20% before breaking even??

Thanks,

Jon

Depends how much they go up!

Not being a regular trader I use Halifax sharebuilder which kind of a hybrid between a regular saver account and a sharedealing account where you get discounted fees (about £2 to buy) for "planned" investments. I save a regular (small amount) in there each month, then periodically do a one off planned buy to take advantage of the fees.

I was looking at Halifax sharebuilder. How do you qualify for the planned investments?

Thanks!

What do you mean?

Once you have an account, you can set up buys of the share of your choice to be made at specific dates each month - I think its 4 days per month. Essentially there are three stages:

Funding: Either a recurring payment or one off

Buying Shares: Choose from a recurring planned investment (which would typically follow your recurring funding of the account), a one-off "planned" investment (ie, a share purchase on one of the specific days to take advantage of the reduced fee), or a normal share purchase at the time you want where you pay the normal sharedealing charge (£10-12 from memory)

Selling Shares: Can be done at anytime with normal sharedealing cost.

Well that was a brutal couple of days, I usually step away and wait so I don't do anything rashsmile
But...

I am giving miners and minerals some consideration.
Almost went with Southern Copper SCCO, but decided on OZ Minerals OZMLF, a much smaller company, report due next week, let's hope it's positive.

Why not go to the casino and put it all on black? Seriously?

You're not making investment decisions, you're gambling.

I do one to two hours a day preparation so I gamble wisely.
The contents of my fridge depend on me making sound decisions.

Elevating my exposure by a couple of percent into precious metals is not gambling it is a hedge.

Yeah, they're all false. If you believe the idiots on that board it's a huge conspiracy between Gotham and the media and now the FT are involved too and have you bought shares in Bacofoil?
