The industry you have to have by law and who regulate themselves
Firstly, it's not an industry you have to have by law, it's an industry that sells hundreds of products, 2 of which are required by law, employer's liability and motor insurance. And in fact you don't have to have motor insurance by law. You can just lodge £500K with the govt and be exempt from buying motor insurance.

And they don't regulate themselves. Where did you get that idea from?

Indeed!

Motor insurance is one of the most competitive industries there is, as evidenced by the very low profile margins (and frequent underwriting losses made from year to year).

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant...!

I'm with Tesco Bank and they are decent. But I did have a laugh when I rang them to update the reg as my private plate had gone on and the computer calculated an additional premium of £1.75. Must be because my plate lost a whole letter??!

I wouldn't use Admiral to insure a kid scooter, much less a car. They are untrustworthy, lie and deliberately mislead their customers. To quote a mate after I told him a situation "I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire".

When you speak to people around the industry (legal services that operate in the industry, accident management companies etc) they are well known for being scumbags.

The whole industry badly needs a shake up to be honest, its little more than a scam at the moment.

I am of the opinion that insurance companies deliberately and falsely inflate the cost of claims against rival companies, the only person that loses out in this is the punter.

the regulator that is in bed with most of the insurers you mean ?

They are an utter waste of space. They told me "facts" that were proven untrue, I complained about this, never heard from them again. Gave up ringing them to enquire what they were doing about the complaint.

I'd never insure a car with admiral, bell elephant etc.

They just seem so sketchy and unprofessional.

When I first contacted them they told me they were trying a new scheme with certain insurers to try and resolve issues quickly. This basically means they actually use a telephone to talk to people instead of sending letters. No incentive for the insurers to be in such a scheme, other than verdicts go their way.

Put it another way, what evidence do you have that shows they aren't ?

if you had to deal with them you'd understand. They ignored what I said and agreed with the insurer, despite them admitting that the insurer had misled me.

You're making quite a generalisation about the whole industry based on an individual experience. I bet I've had much more interaction with motor insurers (and the regulator) than you!

So show me I'm wrong.

The Ombudsman, either through choice or otherwise is completely ineffective.

The insurance companies themselves profess to be looking after their customers, when in factual fact nothing could be further from the truth. We're just pawns in a game of blatant profiteering and scams.

Show me I'm wrong.

What you mean is that the Ombudsman didn't side with you in your case? Thats entirely different. I also guess you don't understand the difference between the Regulator and the Ombudsman?

How about you show me you're right - you're the one making the accusations!

As a starter, what's the average underwriting profit made by the industry in the last 5 years?

Show me evidence to prove that I haven't got fairies at the bottom of my garden. You can't. I'm not sure that you understand how evidence works. It's up to you to come up with evidence that something you claim to be true, is. Not up to me to prove it isn't!
