The wheel was found by luck. We bought my son a sit on car for Christmas. I looked online for other things made by this company and found you could upgrade parts. Saw the wheel, measured diameter and By luck it was what I needed!
I can't remember now where I got it though. £25 has working indicators, horn and other effects.
Cheers - I'll keep an eye out for it. I've just bought two Wii wheels, which should do for now. My lad's not even 3 yet, so steering isn't his strong point at the moment.

I realise this is something of a revival however.....

Just bought the plans for one of these (for my daughter - not *yet* a petrolhead at 18 months but I figured start early, and by the time its finished she might like it...!)

I'm currently amassing parts, however the one common question that crops up (and I've yet to find a suitable seller) is

Where do you all get the wheels from?

The plans state 12" diameter (including tyre) with a 12mm bore - however i can only find either 12mm bore or 12" diameter, not both.

If needs be I'll buy them from the seller of the plans (but at £50 i was hoping to source some a bit cheaper....)

(And yes, I did post this over in the other thread for swing bin racers, but i figured belt and braces - might get seen by more people!)

I have been working on building one for my son for a few months now, it was his 4th birthday last weekend and was going to give it to him as a present, i missed the deadline though, so he got a bike instead.
I managed to get it finished mid week, however having some steering issues, need some help on getting the setup right. Also need to buy a steering wheel as the Wii one is not very good, its cracked as i over tightened a nut. Any tips on which steering wheel to buy?

This is the steering setup that i need some help with, tyres turn when off the ground, however once on the ground and has some weight in it, they don't turn:

I would have thought one from a used Ketter cart would be ideal (I almost bought one to rip the parts off but alas never happened!).

Are your wheels from the seller of the plans or did you source them yourself?

The wheels are from the seller of the plans.
I ended up getting a steering wheel from a go kart and reconstructing the entire steering mechanism. Works a treat now.
Will get some pictures up in the next few days.

Hey guys,

I was taking some rubbish to the dump this morning and i noticed an old PS2 steering wheel set with the pedals and the gear shift.

Do you think it would be possible to wire the PS2 pedals to the drill power switch for accelerating? and wire the PS2 gear shift to the drill forward and reverse switch?

I haven't brought the plans yet so I've no idea how the accelerating system works but from the eBay ad I don't recall anything that mentions soldering etc.

Ive built one.
The drill is literally mechanically operated by means of pedal, bike brake/gear cable around drill switch.

After waiting 8 years for a grandchild to arrive I finally could have ago at this.

Being pistonheads it had to be modified so I chopped up my unused golf trolly and started the build.

I did the usual with the steering with rose joints and threaded rod but changed to a mark 2 version

Holy thread resurrection Batman....
This lockdown has provided me with time to finally build a swing bin racer for my girls.

It goes at a jogging pace and they love it!
But my battery pack only lasts 10 min. It's built round an old workzone 18v drill.
Does anyone have one of these drills/batteries they would be willing to part with to double the run time? Or know of where there are any in stock? My Google skills are yielding any results.

Thanks smile

I know the purists will always want an elegant swing bin Racer, but this lawn mower stock car conversion amused me.

This thread has inspired me, and I have ordered the plans for this for my 20 month old daughter. Plan is to get it running by her birthday in August!

Her mother is less impressed.

I would expect basically any 18 volt drill battery to power it, the 'T' terminal is usually only used for charging.

So if you have another drill, or can buy another reasonable large-capacity two-battery drill off ebay, then you should be able to use that. Ether by just swapping the drills over, or by crock clipping from '+' to '+' and '-' to '-' , or even cutting the end of the new slave drill and buchering it into a battery holder.

The other way which might actually work just as well is to get a 12v lead acid car battery and run it off that, which would give huge capacity. Depending how much power the lost 6v (25%) makes and if that is acceptable.

Thanks Daniel,

I've done exactly what you suggest. The power source drill taken apart and soldered wire onto the battery terminals and a wire connection then to the battery and a larger Makita style LXT battery from Ebay for £17.

This then made me look at other better drills once I'd figured that I didn't need the specific batteries but a similar voltage one would work. I found a Dewalt combi drill for a tenner, an older style nicad one without the battery. 18v again so it works well with the new setup of soldered wires to the drill then a connection to the battery pack housed separately.

The improved drill certainly made a big improvement in performance.
Looking forward to being able to use it outside soon!

I'd love to setup a pedal brake system, but it is not really needed and could just over complicate things.

I like it, knackered drill with good battery, meet good drill with old batteries!

I worked for a company who made electric vehicles out of mobility/golf kart motors and controllers, so managed to bag a transaxle and controller which where no longer suitable for a customer machine but in otherwise serviceable condition, so combined with a 12v VRLA would make a nice drive system. All I need now is a child the time in inclination to build something!

OP any chance you could post up a couple more pictures of the steering as the one I built for my soon using the standard cable steering as per plans, needs an up grade, now my son has got better at driving. Assume you have used rose joints at both ends? Did you build the rest of the steering to the plans?
Here is some pictures of my efforts.
