The definitive low-energy GU10 lighting thread

Have they started making less bright halogen GU10's or have they just changed the data sheets to match their 5w GU10's so they can now claim a '50w equivalent' ? Who knows.
Curious isn't it Bax? Glad we think alike on the subject....Just discussed this with a colleague who has significantly more experience than me and he thinks the same. Marketing.

I think also that there are just some poor quality ones around. We tested an own-brand Homebase GU10 50w halogen and not only did it only produce 275 Lumens it also only consumed 45w! We also tested a premium GE 50w Halogen and it produced 451 Lumens. These were independently tested by Photometric and Optical Testing ( www.photometrictesting.co.uk ).Just discussed this with a colleague who has significantly more experience than me and he thinks the same. We use Dr. Gareth John at that lab to test our stuff & I can well believe the differences you got & can be certain that the same inconsistencies exist in the LED world as well - that's why we use him, at least you have some credible independant data to back up your claims - something most companies won't bother with.
Yes, Gareth is a nice bloke and helped us loads. I'm out of the lighting industry now (sold last May), although kind of missing it in some ways! Bizarrely enough, and I'm not sure if he's made the connection, but I bumped into E36GUY in the Pistenklause Nurburgring last year and we got chatting. I only realised afterwards he was a PHer!

I hadn't made the connection but I certainly remember that! If I recall you were just in the process of selling up! Two images, not the best, but good enough for the intended purpose.
One is a GU10 7w LED Spot, 345 Lumens, 2700k, 95 CRI, 36 Beam Angle
the other is a Phillips 50w Halogen manufactured about 4 years ago and unused till a couple of months ago.

The lights imho are positioned too far from the side walls. You really need them closer to the walls to cast the light down the walls and to ensure you dont cast shadows over the prep area from your own body.
I agree the lighting in this image is not designed well at all but the images were posted to simply show that a 345 lumen GU10 LED spotlight can match a 50w halogen (manufactured some time ago for the conspiracy theorists amongst us) in terms of colour and brightness and therefore to ignore those who seem hell bent on persuading people not to look at a simple retrofit LED spotlight in order to self promote. Couple of questions before I go a bit crazy with the ordering for zep1s
I'm sticking them in a couple of back bedrooms, above them is attic which I'm planning on insulating quite heavily. I noticed in another thread that E36guy suggested just sticking plant pots over the top of them to keep the insulation off them, that was a few years ago. Is that still the way forward, or is there some kind of cover thats also sold? If I go plant pot route, how far from the back of the light should the base of the pot be?
In one bedroom, along the back wall above the bed is a neon strip light thats used for a reading light, debating between led neon tube replacements, and the rolls of leds. Would either be good enough to read off?
When you're doing the lighting plan for a bedroom, do you have lights directly over the bed?
Chaps
Not wishing to trawl through the whole thread, is there a general consensus on a 'decent' LED GU10 bulb?
Ive tried some from amazon, worked really well.............for 4 months. Might have saved some power, but that wouldn't have made up for the outlay (tenner a bulb)
I'm looking at the kitchen at the moment, before replacing them in the stairs and hallway. Not wishing to spend more than a tenner, am I asking too much?
Cheers!

Had 13 of these going fine for nearly a year now. Very impressed with colour of light and brightness.

Send me a drawing with dimensions of your bedroom matey and I'll render it - with a reading strip as you suggest - how far abovce the bed is it? Pics would be useful if you could manage those?I'm sticking them in a couple of back bedrooms, above them is attic which I'm planning on insulating quite heavily. Lovely cheers, will do! I'm back at the property on saturday, hopefully will have a mate doing a floor plan for me too, which should answer some of your questions. Cheers!DudleySquires said:
Got some ZEP1s and led strip from Guy a little while ago now. It's taken me until now to upload a pic of the end result. Very pleased with both the products and the service from Guy.
That would be massively improved with the black collar inserts that reduce the glare from the lights. Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
