White with white my personal favourite.
Me too. Black just seems to get lost in the facade somehow. White picks it out nicely.

I think thats why I like the black - it takes your eye away from the windows and more to the building itself. Its a good job we don't all like the same things!

Grey is an option, but I think it will look very "new".

The current windows are not white, but pale green, I don't think that would look right on new ones either.
Out of the two black is best. IMO pale green works best against stone, but this might be the exception...

black, black, black but if you are having oak cills then the front door and associated timber should tie back to the window cills...

I've green frames (wooden not PVC but now available as UPVC) and I think it lifts the house, but not quite so harsh as white.
However our house is only 20 years old, so may not work for an older house.

Not sure this picture helps to be honest, but here goes. (great thread by the way, really enjoing the updates)

First reply to this topic, but I have been following with great interest. Great job so far.

As for the windows, that's a tough choice. Just to complicate things, have you looked into white windows with black frames or black windows with white frames?

I would agree an oak front door to match the oak window sill.

My neighbour updated crittall windows (a few years ago now) with white windows and black (hardwood) frames, white sofit and black gutters, Oak front door and garage door - really suits the house - I know it's a different style, but I could see yours working too. Here's a picture:

Some other examples:

Thanks for the opinions guys, helps to get a balanced view.

The front door will match the cills, that is being replaced. The houses either side, although not in a similar style have black featuring heavily on the windows and fascias so it would be in keeping.

It's an option to have the aluminium frames in hardwood frames, but they are considerably more expensive, you end up with less glass and they will require maintenance, so not for me.

Today was a mixed day, we started off finishing some of the cut rafters into the lay boards but quickly finished that. I called the steel fabricator to see whether he knew what time the steel would be delivered here ready for him to come and weld, he went off to check only to call back to say that for some reason it's been left off the lorry and won't be delivered today. That's despite lining them up 3 weeks ago, ready for delivery today, it really should have been in hand sooner than this.

I told them that wasn't good enough and we'd have to look elsewhere so the fabricator sent his transport guy off 35 miles to go and collect it himself, whilst he is half way there he gets a call to say they had lied, they haven't actually cut or painted any steel so we can't have it until tomorrow. Our chippy then calls another local firm, orders the steel from them, which is actually cheaper and goes off to collect the shorter length in his van. Except we then have to line up the fabricator's transport chap to go and collect it from the local place before he goes off somewhere else. All quite frantic but we eventually get both bits of steel on site at about 2pm, having done virtually no carpentry today.

6.1 meter 190kg steel

Landing beam installed

Valley beam in and being bolted in place

Trusty helpers painting the beam in the rain and fitting timber packing ready for the joist hangers tomorrow

Steel in place eventually

So, not as much achieved today as I'd hoped, but given the dire start the day got off to I'm happy the steel is in without knocking down any walls or any mishaps and it's ready for us to crack on with more trusses tomorrow, however heavy rain is forecast for all day so we'll need our coats!

Good recovery!

On the windows black is traditional for the area and period.

Today featured torrential rain and high winds, ideal conditions for installing roof trusses!

No photos as my iPhone decided 35% battery life insufficient for operating at all, but all the trusses are up on one side with only 6 left to go on the other side. The majority of the timbers should be up tomorrow so I will get more photos then.

good call on the black windows and coordinated door and cills...

shame about the weather but perhaps a well needed rest given the relentless pace?

Don't be silly, he can't stop to rest as we wouldn't get any updates. Can't believe the progress you've made, impressive!

Windows all measured and ready to place an order, the doors will take an extra 4-6 weeks as we have to wait to confirm finished floor level.

The roof continued today, all going relatively smoothly and will resume again tomorrow.

More good news, national grid have rescinded a £500 bill for digging through one of their pipes smile

The scaffolders were also back for a little bit and will finish all the scaffolding around the front on Wednesday.

Hello Muncher. Fascinated by your project - especially all the work you are doing your self. The speed you are getting it up is remarkable. I've just purchased a very similar property but in Surrey. Cottage look, 1928, Crittall windows, quite thin front to back, no work done on it since the 1960's and it is the smallest property on the street with a large plot so we'll be looking to extend. I’ll see if I can post a pic once I get home. Our previous owner did a lot more maintenance though so it is habitable and we’ve moved in. We had to do something about the driveway though straight away as they only had a VW Polo that lived in the tiny garage (going). We hope to find an architect soon then after we get planing we'll move out for the duration of the build. It would be great to pick your brains for some advice. In particular, if it isn’t too cheeky can you PM me if you wouldn’t mind telling me some more about the replica Crittall window suppliers you checked out? I’ll be following your progress keenly!

No problems, I'll drop you a PM over the next few days.

I'm back at work in London now each day so my Dad is carrying on the work at the moment. More carpentry has been done on the roof, which is almost complete, hopefully will be by the end of the week. The steel guy has been back with another steel to support the brickwork around the corner of the master bedroom where the roof slopes into the corner of the room, that should be fitted this week. The scaffolders have been back and done a bit more but will be back to complete it tomorrow.

It looks like the plan at the moment is to get the existing tiles stripped off the rest of the roof over the weekend and the new membrane and battens will start to go on on Monday.

Yep, on his iPad. I went there tonight and got a couple but I think from next week or so it will be dark by the time I get there. I can't post them as although I can upload them to FB from my phone I can't right click to get the image URL.
