The ultion locks are nice but the company has a policy of not selling to the public. As much as I don't want all the local locksmiths to go out of business I'm not sure u can justify paying one to replace a euro cylinder

Personally thinking of going for Yale Superior 1* locks and already have security handles, making it a 3* combo. Can't see any disadvantages at the moment - locks are about half the price. Anyone disagree?

That will be fine - as long as your house is the most secure one on the street that's all that matters!

It looks like Leeds Lock Centre will sell you a Brisant Ultion cylinder.

Whilst I'm no locksmith, shouldn't a reputable 3* cylinder be enough? E.g. Mul-T-Lock's aforementioned Break Secure XP has passed all the relevant tests. Presumably these tests are not just vs. snapping, but vs. drilling too confused ?

I think some of the early high security handles from Hoppe were breached, then Hoppe upgraded its design. But that's only Internet hearsay - someone will know better than me.
I need a new handle on the front anyway hence getting a security handle. Plus to me it seems sensible to put a decent handle on the otherwise any lock is surely going to struggle a bit.

Only thing to bear in mind, is that both the ultion and the avocet abs mk3 meet the sold secure SS312 diamond standard. That means they hold upto attack by a locksmith using locksmith tools. They are the only 2 locks on the market to pass this.

Yes it may be a royal pain in the proverbials if some one snaps it, BUT id far rather pay out £100s for a lock smith than the £100-200 quid insurance excess and then trying to get a good nights sleep, knowing someone had been prowling round my house......

Plus if you do the lock and security handles, then thats 5* rating right there.

I should add, i keep shotguns and just had a new composite door fitted. Unfortunately it came with a UAP+ 1star kite-marked lock on it. After much research ive fitted the avocet abs mk3 as it was easier to get a hold of than the ultion. I wont say where i got it from as just joined and it will look like spamming.

Interesting point though, when a lock is submitted for snap testing, if it passes it get a 3 star kitemark stamped onto it, if it fails then it gets the 1 star kitemark. So 1 star locks on their own are useless.

I bought Avocet and am very pleased to find that I can also buy padlocks to fit the key I already have. So I am able to have one key for all the doors and padlocks on the shed and garage.

The ABS key is quite pocket friendly too with a lack of sharp edges. The magnet grabs small change though.

No, they aren't the only two lock cylinders to pass the Sold Secure Diamond test. The Federal UCF cylinder has passed this test too. You can do a product search on the Sold Secure website to see which lock cylinders are Diamond standard.

Mul-T-Lock's Break Secure XP was actually the first cylinder to pass the Diamond test, but it didn't maintain it.
What went wrong with the Mul-T-Lock?

I did overlook the federal iron guard cylinder, my concern there was you can only buy them on the bay as far as I can see. Plus they are made in Taiwan. Not sure how much guarantee you get on them? as the other locks are UK made and based. Each to their own I guess but I prefer dealing closer to home.

Anyway I have 'rockdoors ultimate' and they came with as security handled, winkhaus lock and anti snap cylinder barrel.

I am not convinced this is the best setup to be honest, the handle my suffice but I'm looking to swap to ABS or Ultion.

Speaking of which, can I buy ultion locks anywhere online?

I mean buy immediately rather than submitting a form for a quote and paying over the phone etc.

I could be wrong (often am lol) but i think the ultion is made for trade fitting, i know both abs and ultion are developed by same guy but i think the ultion was an after thought to help locksmiths make a buck, as the cylinders are so easy to change. I went with avocet abs as easier to buy.

You may have point about the jamming SVS, seems the ultion does away with the magnet on the key. Ill just need to give mine a wipe on my trousers from now on 😄

I've had ABS locks on my house since we moved in, and before that on my workshop. All are keyed the same.

We also have an ABS cylinder lock for the "Yale" style catch on the front door. Handy as only needs one key to get in. It's a wooden door with an euro deadbolt with a ABS cylinder in it, and the rest of the locks in the house are slowly being converted to euro and then to ABS as I can afford it.

I've never had any problems with the magnets, and have bought all mine from Lock and Key online. If you register the keycode, only you can order keys for it.

I've done my parent's place and I'm in the process of changing mine over too. So far I'm very impressed, although I got one of the key'd padlocks and it feels a bit flimsy to me. The locks themselves seem very solid.

I did wonder about those, but you can get a very chunky padlock that take half euro cylinders - I forget the name now, but was going to order one. Not cheap though as I found out!

It's worth pointing out that if you have a lot of locks, it's about £50 a lock to do - my house has 8 locks (9 if you include the yale cylinder) so it's a real investment in security if you go all keyed alike. Upside to all keyed alike is you need only use one key, have one key to hide somewhere (not a big bunch) and you can't get locked out with a key in the lock if you upset the missus, as she only has the one key wink

I also plan on putting an electronic strike/keypad on the front door off the yale lock, and just overlock with the euro deadbolt when we're out - makes popping in/out easier, and you can keep track of people with individual codes and fobs - ideal if you're having work done. This would be done using a Net2+ system BTW.

Thread resurrected to answer this question, in case it helps other PHers.
Thanks very much! Glad I put off ordering the ABS ones.

I do have Winkhaus cylinders in my Rockdoor Ultimate doors but from what I gather the locks are pretty st, its only the fact they are incased in a separate anti snap bracket and the door handles are anti drill do they get SBD certification.

The handles, bracket and Ultion locks should be the best combination I think.

Chaps some advice please

I just fitted an abs lock on front door, my old lock was 50/50 so got like for like

Does it protrude out too much on the outside? It's like 3mm

I think 50/45 (ext) maybe just pushing it a little, what you think?

also been reading and bit worried about having the ABS on the front door, as if it snaps then i wont be able to get in and we dont really carry the back door key around with us.

im thinking maybe Mul-T-Lock XP for the front and the ABS for the other doors

Neighbour got burgled last night, in through cheap nasty barrel lock on upvc doors. Offered to help out sourcing new locks and handles

I had a couople of Mul-T-lock garrisons knocking about so all good there and had the idea of picking up some of those HOPPE solid handles (Atlanta i Think) but they are designed for 70mm thick doors and these upvc ones are 60mm. Any idea of where i can pick them up in this thickness?

Failing that any handle sets which are designed to resist being snapped by mole grips?

Cheers

you can buy the screws for the 60mm separate, like this: http://www.lockandkey.co.uk/products/Hoppe-Tokyo-/...

how do you rate the Mul-T-lock garrisons ?

Really good, place here in Leeds has decent stocks of them in every size as well as cutting facility, think i pay about 30ish a look too which is good considering i have a portfolio of 26 so 52 locks to look after in total. After 2 burgalries in 2 days i decided enough was enough and started to fit out every house with those and the Hoppe PAS 24 handles. Not an ounce of bother since.

Nice big secured by design logo on the handle i think deters any scum from trying to get through.

Thanks for the link, just the ticket!
