Looking good! I thought for a minute you love right behind my old house in Tile Hill, but on closer inspection realised the angle of the garage opposite is wrong. (Yes I'm a geek!)

What did the wood for the raised bed set you back, if you don't mind me asking? It looks very good!

No, not Tile Hill, im in Chappelfields. The Woodblocx cost just under £400 delivered.

The builder wasn't able to get on site today, so no progress. Hopefully it will be nearly finished when I get back from Le Mans on Monday - apparently the roof is going on next week!

Whilst I was at Le Mans the builders made good progress, with three sides now at full height. Due to the slight slope of the garden the garage looks higher than I was expecting, but my plans were based on the garden being flat.

We are still on schedule for the roof to be fitted this week, at which point it will start to feel more like a garage.

how much higher will the finished roof be compared to the previous one?

I'll have to check that, I'm not sure what the old height was, but think I've got a note of it at home. At the garage door side the roof height will be just under 2.5m to fit in with permitted development, however it will be higher at the house side, probably nearer 3m.

I think the old garage was about 8' (2.4m) to ridge height, but raised up by 2 courses of bricks. It looks like it was a wee bit higher than my neighbours shed.

The new one is only slightly higher, but because that height is full width it looks worse. The neighbours thought I was having a pitched roof, like the other big garages on the street, so are happier with the height. I had to go for a 6'6 door, rather than 7' to keep the total height down, I'm now glad I did this.

The remaining brickwork on the left wall has been finished and the wall plates should be going on tomorrow.

I'm now trying to work out what to do with the path alongside the garage. The distance between the garage & fence is bang on 1800mm, so too tight for 3 x 600mm slabs, but 2 x 600mm slabs is going to be too narrow.

2 x 600mm slabs with a 300mm gravel soak away either side?

That is what it is most likely to be, along with a step to get into the garage.

I had been planning to move the log store to the path to free up some space under the verandah, so I'll probably need to add a more solid base where I have that.

would you not consider laying some turf and maintain a border on fence side and step set in gravel border the garage side... might tie in with the rest of the garden a bit more?

I was worried about the lack of light and wanted to use the space by the side of the garage for extra storage.

It looks like the decision has been made for me though as the builder has put foundations down next to the garage, so 1200mm path and a gap on the other side, so will work out what to do with that later.

The woodwork for the roof and the steel lintel is going on today.

Garage progress after the thirteenth day by Lewis Craik, on Flickr

The brickwork for the walls is now complete, with just a couple of piers to do once the concrete floor has been laid. Work on the roof has started, the wall plates and joists have been fitted and the boarding is about half done. The roofer will finish off the roof on Tuesday and the window and personnel door will be fitted on Wednesday.

Work has also started on the path down the side of the garage and the base for the shed, which will use the old slabs.

The next step is to fit the steel lintel above what will be the garage door, which should be happening tomorrow. I have also got the garage door company coming round to measure up - although I planned the build so that an off the shelf door will fit.

Since the picture was taken we have spent a good few hours tidying up the garden and clearing the bed on the left ready for the fencer to start work on the rest of the fence.

We have committed to have Christmas for my family at the house - which means we need to make sure the dining room is ready on time, which is the next project after the garage.

No picture today, as it looks pretty much the same as yesterday, the carpentry on the roof has been pretty much finished and the roofer is starting tomorrow to fit the torch on felt.

The fencer is also coming tomorrow to do the fence at the back fence, gate and left fence, so it is going to be busy at 119 tomorrow and I should have a good update!

Lots of progress today, the roof is finished as is the fence on the left side of the garden and the back gate:

Jen and our neighbour aren't 100% happy with the fence nearest the house, as they think it is too low, but that should be an easy fix.

The plan for tomorrow is that the door, window soffits and guttering will be fitted, so from the house the garage should look finished!

Now that the facias, window and side door (minus bottom panel) are fitted it looks a lot more complete. The path down the side of the garage has also been started, although we've ran out of slabs, a combination of not ordering enough and some breaking when they were laid - I was hoping that "premium" slabs from a paving place would be better than that, although they have said they will replace them. We're still not fully decided what we will do between the path and the fence, for now we may just lay some of the old slabs to park the bins on.

I've been told the concrete floor is going down on Friday, so I really need to hurry up and get the garage door ordered.

Yes, exactly the point, the old one was too narrow to fit a modern car in, even a small one like my MR2, let alone have room to work on it too.

Stood inside it feels really big, but I'm sure it will feel smaller once I fill it with car & tools etc.
