The garage door was £1450 fitted.

Just had a call from the electrician, the fuse board is connected and the connection has been made for the garage door, so I will be able to park my car in there this evening!

My task now is to work out how I can link the garage door to the yet to be fitted, so that the alarm won't go off when I open the door, but does go off if someone breaks in. I believe I can get a receiver from Hormann which will receive a signal from the second button on the remote, so that may be the best starting point.

Could you not have gone for the hormann opener with light bulbs? Surely that would have been the easiest option for lighting?

It has got a light bulb on it, but not really bright enough for a workshop.

Shame; mine (liftmaster) will go to 2x100W which is plenty for my double garage. It can also control additional light socket expansion modules from the interior keypad; it might be worth looking at accesories for yours - garage door companies have upped their game in recent years and the flexibility they can offer might be convenient.

I'd definitely get the interior keypad, couldn't live without mine.

Excuse the crap phone picture, but the MR2 is in the garage!

I need to measure the length of the garage again, as it seems shorter than I was expecting, but that will only be a problem if I get a car much bigger than the MR2.

I've also ordered some keyed alike euro cylinders for the back door and the garage side door, as I'm needing to carry too many keys around now.

I've got an interior key pad, or at least a button to open the door. I'm going to research what is available to link into the alarm, so will look at triggers for the lighting too, but the long term plan is LED down lights.

Doh! by Lewis Craik, on Flickr

That was not part of the plan - in a rush to get Jen to the station this morning thought I'd have enough space to pull out the garage, but didn't and that happened mid 5 point turn. Gutted.

Going to look at positioning the car in the garage slightly differently or driving in forwards, but I think the better solution may be to move the fence post back to give a better angle.

I'd have had a bigger garage if I could get away with it! The original plan was 4m x 7m, but that was revised down to 4m x 5.5m due to budget, but those are the external dimensions, inside it is about 3.8m by 5.1m, so plenty of space for storage down one side and room to work on the car.

My garage has been referred to as: "The surgically clean man cave of a serial killer..." I think I'll take that as a compliment.

There hasn't been much progress this week, the builder hasn't turned up to sort out the snagging but I've booked the electrician in next week to finish the second fix in the garage.

Having the car in the garage has meant that I've been leaving the house through the back door, which we only had one key for, so before this became a problem I swapped the lock over to an ABS one (as recommended by PH) which is more secure as well as having more keys. I'll get the lock on the garage personnel door swapped to the same, but keyed alike to keep my key ring streamlined.

Not sure where the weekend went really, but I didn't get much work done on the house or garage. Just a bit of woodwork painting and a visit to the local independent windows place, to look at new French windows. Has anyone got experience of The English Door Company? Jen is quite keen on them.

The main thing happening this week is that our shed is being delivered.

If you're using euro locks, make sure you get 'bump' proof ones.

ABS Avocet, as per PH recommendations.

The shed was delivered today, and I've got a few mates coming round on Saturday for a BBQ, so will get them to help me build it.

Also got the quote through for new French windows - £1800! I wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near that much.

I'm back at home now, and managed to get the woodwork in the garage painted before the electrician comes back tomorrow. I also made a quick layout sketch, based on the actual dimensions, to see where the work bench would fit:

Proposed Phase 1 Garage Layout by Lewis Craik, on Flickr

It looks like the workbench would be too close to the car if it was in front of the window, so I'll have it on the side of the garage, crucial to decide tonight as the electrician is going to be fitting extra sockets and lighting for the work bench!

If you aren't 100% sure (or even if you think you are it might be worth paying a bit extra now and getting sockets put in multiple locations just in case. It';ll stop you kicking yourself in the future and give you the opportunity to move things around the man cave in the future just because you can smile

I would put the bench on the wall with the door, this will give you more flexibility.
If you get a normal sized car, then you'll need the length of the garage

As all the electrics will be surface mounted I'm trying to balance number of sockets, vs trucking running everywhere.
