Only reason I ask is because I have just got the baby to sleep, then a neighbour fires up the lawn mower, now baby won't go back to sleep. When can I go round there and kick off?
it's about the right time to do it in this heat really. Any earlier and it might kill the grass.
this^^^^

If your baby can't sleep through the sound if a mower next door then good luck to you for the next 16 years rolleyes

The noise didn't wake your baby up
I'd probably agree with that. In my experience, most babies (we've had three, and plenty more amongst friends and family) will go to sleep and remain asleep through a chorus of jackhammers and angle grinders so long as it's not something which is actually stimulating them.

My wife can quite happily go and hoover the kids' rooms once they're asleep without waking them up, and they're also completely oblivious to the smoke detectors, one of which is on the landing right outside their doors.

Very, very unlikely in my opinion that the lawnmower work the baby up. Coincidence in my view.

Close, he was asleep in his cot, I was outside. Lawn mower started, baby woke up, then I was annoyed
Noises like that send most kids off to sleep. My 4-month old dozes off if we start the hoover.

8pm is not too bad, really. The chap probably got home from work around 6 or so, had his dinner and then started mowing. Not unreasonable, really.

Anything could've woken your child up, maybe you closing the door when you went outside.
I don't understand why some parents feel their kids need silence. Friends of mine don't flush their fking toilet once they've put the kids to sleep, it's disgusting. If I use their toilet the first thing I do is flush it, then obviously again when I'm done. Not once has either of their children so much as stirred. Weirdos.

Oh and 8pm is not too late.

Yep, the world is full of inconsiderate selfish morons, confirmed on PH every day.

It won't 'kill' the grass to do it in the blazing heat of the day, if you really believe that, leave it until the weather is cooler.

And yes it is completely unreasonable and inconsiderate to mow it at a time of evening in a residential area in sultry conditions when every one will have their windows cracked and it is obvious dozens of young kids will have been put to bed by responsible parents.

If you think it is so reasonable, why would it be 'illegal' to be using construction equipment at that time of day?

Sadly, consideration for others really is something that only maturity brings.

Seriously?????

My kids are 9, 6 and 4. They wouldn't notice the sound of a lawnmower when they were going to bed any more than they would've noticed it when they were babies.

Consideration goes both ways, and I'd suggest its inconsiderate to expect people not to carry out normal, everyday maintenance on their houses and gardens at 8pm. It's mowing the lawn for God's sake! Hardly an activity which is going to take all night, is it?

Just out of interest, where have you seen a regulation saying that it is illegal to use construction equipment at 8pm? As far as I am aware, councils can impose regulations on construction sites on a case by case basis under the 1974 Control of Pollution act, but I don't think there's a blanket ban on construction equipment at that time of day.

No one seems to have noticed this. My sympathies but I don't think the neighbour was being unreasonable, just unfortunate timing.

No not acceptable people are trying to relax and kids are going to sleep around that time. I would say the best time for mowing is 8:30-17:00, maybe a slightly later start at the weekend.

Has the world gone mad?

Last night at 8pm the sun was still shining, people were out and about and a man isnt meant to mow his lawn? Would you rather he does it at 8am on a Sunday?

I am shocked at some people

I think you'll find most people are at work/on PH during those hours!

Why are you shocked, everyone has different views on what's too late or too early. Presumably you wouldn't cut your grass after a certain time of day due to the noise?

I don't use the lawn mower earlier than 10am or past 9pm.

My neighbour had a petrol chainsaw going at 8.30 last Saturday morning which I thought was a bit poor form.

There's noise and there's noise. Someone mowing the lawn on a summer evening is just a standard part of life. If the OP's teething baby hadn't coincidentally woken up at the same time, I doubt he would've even noticed the lawnmower.

Probably after maybe 10pm, I am shocked that the OP was bothered and that people are backing him up

8pm is a (IMO) ridiculous time to be complaining about, unless he has a 747 powered lawn mower its hardly a loud noise, what would he do if people dared to have some friends over and have a BBQ with (shock horror) some music

I'd have no problem with mowing, a hammer drill in the wall at that time is another matter.

Maybe he got fed up of listening to his neighbours baby crying, so decided to do something constructive instead? [/devils advocate]

8pm is not unreasonable, but I feel the frustration of the OP having been there, as others have said get the little'un used to the noise. If its not a lawnmower next time it'll be 2 stroke scooters, police helicopters, or a bad-boy corsa halfruads induction passing by.

Noise is unavoidable unless you live out in the sticks.

It's worse in the sticks, believe me.

And the noise should be measured at 3/4 throttle 1m away from the exhaust at 45 degrees.

I tend to mow the lawn around 9:00am on a Sunday. Boy does that ps off my kids! biggrin
