If I buy a triple set of cordless phones for different locations throughout the house am I right in thinking that I will need a telephone socket at each of the three sockets?
Are there any phones that are sophisticated enough to mean that I can have one phone's base linked to a socket while the other two can receive some sort of digital signal from the main base thus not requiring to each be plugged into their own socket?

No.
I have a twin set of the Siemens Gigaset and only the main phone requires connection to the BT line.
The other is simply plugged into a standard UK power socket for charging purposes.

You only need I phone socket - there are loads of digital cordless phones on the market

Last set of triples I owned only had one base station that needed to be plugged into the telephone line. All the others had charging stations that had to be plugged into the mains but the actual phones were left lying around the house and garden. Biggest problem was losing them and getting them wet

Ok, good to hear that the technology has moved on since the last time I had to buy a cordless phone.

Panasonic seem to be the default for a decent home phone

There seems to be many poor quality home phones on the market. Ours tend to last, with light use, about three years before going haywire.

As above - Siemens and Panasonic seem to get the best reviews. I've got a Panasonic KX TGA 850 base station/answer phone with 4 phones in our house, that just plugs into the phone line.
All work fine even the one in the top loft room. Easy enough to set up, sound quality is good. Each one also has a jack socket so you can connect a handsfree headset for conference calls.
We used to have a load of BT hands free (about 4 years ago) but they seemed to be from the ark.

Bought a couple of the gigasets. Expensive, but solidly made.

Panasonic or Siemens We bought these recently and they seem alright, although the first one failed immediately so returned it.

I've been looking at Which? online and all the best rated phones are the Siemens Gigasets with a few Panasonics sneaking in there too.

Siemens gigaset here also, set of four, 12 months use and no problems so far, and this is in a stone built old house, no problems getting a signal.
My daughter as a BT setup, from Staples, on three floors without problems either, other than the phones seem a bit flimsier and the display is not as clear as the Siemens.

Gigasets are great, with some really nice but simple features (like being able to share phonebooks across DECT so you don't need to manually enter numbers into every handset, not ring for withheld numbers, etc).
They've just launched a VOIP + landline version (you can, but don't need to, hook up both connections at the same time) which is really handy (and has a great feature set).
Bought a couple of sets about 2 months ago and found some storming deals on Amazon.

Have Panasonic improved their menus and interface? Had a twin set of theirs a few years back. Phones were fine, quality was good etc, but using them was a pain in the arse - all multi level menus (press 4 for this, 5 for that) with random unhelpful pictures on the buttons
