Used this online local freecycle site to list stuff I didnt have any use for, although you do get genuine people its amazing how many piss takers you get.
Advertised a load of wood for woodburner free to pick up anytime,
some of the replies are unfkn believable eg -

can you send me pictures of what you have - Answer = NO
can you deliver it - answer = NO
would it be suitable to build a kitchen table out of - answer = NO
can you keep it for me until next month (3 weeks) - answer = NO
can you cut it up for me to collect - answer NO, bring a saw!
could i build a shed out of it - answer = NO

My mum advertises stuff on Freecycle too, and the number of complete muppets is huge.

Where are you? I could do with some wood suitable for burning, the shed is running low.

the lot went within 48hrs to someone who turned up and took it - no stupid questions, I have told them I will contact them again when I have another lot to shift ( left overs from large extention build and new roof on existing house!)
Its just incredible the sheer volume of aholes that when you offer something for free expect you to do the running about for it!

Never ever underestimate the absolute stupidity and greed (sadly) of people that want something for nothing, very sad in today's society.

It is all ME ME ME...

By the way, could I build a treehouse out of it wink

I'm willing to collect this wood from you, however before I do, I would like to conduct a test on sample pieces to determine the burn rate and temperature. This will require use of your fire.

I trust that this will be a satisfactory arrangement for you.

I once got rid of a massive Ikea coffee table on Freecycle. It was so heavy I had to help them get it into their car and they didn't even say thanks for it. I wasn't too bothered because I desperately wanted rid of it and couldn't be bothered to take it to the tip but some people are so ungrateful.

You've not got the hang of this - ask the OP to if he could build you a treehouse out of it

To balance the thread I gave a 28" CRT TV away a couple of years ago and the lady who picked it up was so grateful I got a bit embarrassed.

Freecycle, another great idea spoiled only by human nature.

I'd rather throw stuff away than deal with the mouth-breathing mongs on Freecycle again.

Out here in the sticks of rural Oxfordshire it works quite well. I've both taken and given quite a lot of stuff.

The local Freegle moderator nearly banned me though, because I posted this:
"wanted: ban on wanted ads"

I don't know why they allow wanted ads at all, some people are just unrealistic in their expectations. The original idea was a way to move on stuff that was not of value, but too good to throw away.

the really irritating thing regarding alledged "Wanted" ads is the fact that the majority of that stuff turns up advertised for sale the following week.....

Strange but I hardly encounter these people on Freecycle/Freegle. I've given and taken loads of stuff. Got a weights bench and barbell on Saturday!

Know what you mean about people ebaying stuff but it doesn't bother me. I've told collectors that they are welcome to ebay it if they want. If I'd wanted the money, I'd have ebayed it!

It seems to have got worse over time, or perhaps it is regional.

When I lived in Norwich freecycle was pretty good; I do remember we had one lady bring her tiny city car round to pick up a load of compost. It looked like the car had been lowered with it all on board, good effort there and great fun. Also had one guy who gave us a bottle of wine in thanks for us giving him an old fridge. I remember good experiences and nice people overall.

It isn't so great now we've moved to Cambridgeshire, though. Seems to be a lot of unrealistic expectations and people not turning up when they say they will (perhaps this is an unrealistic expectation on my part?).

Yep. never going to use it again. Pretty damn sure the stuff I gave away ended up on ebay or the car boot sale.

I picked up a really nice 80s stereo via Freecycle. smile

What does annoy me are the total over the top wanted ads:

Wanted: Car with tax and mot. or the ones that are finding things to re-sell on eBay.

The local one was full of adverts for unwanted scrap until they banned them all.
