FREECYCLE - people who really take the ****...

I gave away a mattress on Freecycle, I didn't think for a minute anyone would want it but having furnished my first house with second hand stuff I thought I'd see if anyone would.
A middle aged couple took it and were really pleased, they sent me a lovely e-mail after thinking me for it and telling me they had the best sleep they'd had in a decade.
If you get the genuine people it works really well
You've just reminded me... I gave away a pair of white Hi Tech trainers that I'd been given as a present, to an old lady.A middle aged couple took it and were really pleased, they sent me a lovely e-mail after thinking me for it and telling me they had the best sleep they'd had in a decade.

A few weeks later I was shocked to see her husband - who must have been 80 - wearing them.
He told me they were the most comfortable shoes he'd ever worn

One and only time I used put me off for life.
I was getting rid of an old dish washer that worked fine so seemed a waste to bin it.
other then the normal,
can you deliver it?
can I collect it at 2am?
can I confirm that you can fit a motorbike engine in it (the mind boggles)?
However the final straw was the person who asked if I had any of the tablets left over. When I explained that I was using them in my new one, she demanded that I give her those as well and buy some more for myself, then when I had the audacity to tell her to buy her own, she sent me a stty message about how its was out of order for me to advertise something that was completely useless to any one else unless they spent money on it.
I gave up and skipped it.
Were you not tempted to agreee with her, then when she came round to pick it up (assuming she didn't demand it was delivered) say you've changed your mind and smash it up with a sledgehammer in front of her? I think I would have been!I was getting rid of an old dish washer that worked fine so seemed a waste to bin it.

I find if you ignore free cycle, and instead offer stuff to communities of people with whom you have a connection, or who you know will appreciate stuff, then that's better.
For example I've given away large items of furniture to people on my cycling forum, as there are a lot of students setting up home for the first time. I've given away a Rover SD1 to an SD1 club member who I knew wouldn't scrap it. I got it for free in a similar manner, so it seemed only fair.
Actual freecycle, however, nope. Been pissed about too much to do that again.

We furnished our first house largely from freecycle which was great having just blown all our cash on the mortgage. Had loads of stuff since, huge pile of fuel for the woodburner stacked in the garden. Also found it handy for clearing out old junk from houses as people will make use of it, or clean it up and flog on ebay, good luck to them IMO better than it going to landfill.
Have a policy of only responding to people who write polite and legible emails and don't ask for the moon on a stick. The others just get ignored with the rest of the spam.

One of our local Facebook groups had an offer of lots of Xmas dinner veg for free earlier. They had prepped all they needed and had a fair few carrots, parsnip, half a swede and a load of sprouts left.
Fair play to them, hope they don't get too many idiot responses!
At the current rate, I suspect that people will want the turkey and all the trappings. Oh, and what the hell, want an invite round for dinner tomorrow too ....Fair play to them, hope they don't get too many idiot responses!
We changed the rear door earlier this year an posted up the old one on the local facebook page , had two people after it within 15 mins , local guy picked it up next day so well happy to get rid ! When we changed the front door last month the same guy had the front door , apparently the rear door went straight on and chap was well chuffed with it , was also chuffed with the 5 extra sets of keys for the front door . Great way to recycle stuff .
