Hi, I purchased my first house in mid July that has since been unoccupied as it was in a state of disrepair, and I'm still in the process of making it liveable (currently living with my mum). I was under impression I had a 6 month exemption from council tax and thought I'll start getting a monthly bill through the post after the exemption ends (I can't even remember where I got this idea from!) but haven't even given it a second thought since! But speaking to someone yesterday, and he advised me to contact the council as he thinks it's not the case? and reason I haven't had any letters from them already is maybe the fact and elderly lady lived there before and was probably exempt from paying the council tax. the last thing I want is a huge bill afew months down the line, and as the offices are now close until Tuesday, thought I'd ask on Ph to rest my mind at ease either way!..

Dear as, you should tell 'em you're now the owner. IIRC you'll get forms to fill in about the status of the property - no. of residents, habitable etc. Even more IIRC if you can't live there for some reason outside your control - environmental hazard taking > 6 months to sort you might get an extension of exemption. [/alliteration]. Use that new-fangled interweb thing and visit your local council's site,  regards, Jet

Business rates is my expert field but I dabble in Council Tax occasionally. This site http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/Yourl... gives basic details of the exemptions that may apply. Basically if the old lady died there may have been a 6 month exemption period to allow it to be sold. You may then qualify for a 6 month exemption under Class C (empty unfurnished), however if it is undergoing major refurbishment you may be able to get 12 months exemption. Read the site above, check the links to your own council and then call them on Tuesday

Thanks for the replies, so I'm hoping the 6 month exemption may be applicable. Guess I'll find out on Tuesday for sure.
