None of the trees within my house are subject to orders. So I'm safe in that regard.

As has been said - get the correct PPE - Trousers are a must.

The lazy approach for relatively small trees like that is (especially if you've got a couple of retired neighbours next door who have plenty of time on their hands and want their birch trees removed.

A: Get them to start digging out to expose the roots.
B: Use a ladder and climb up a bit to attach a strop about 2/3rd of the way to the top.
C: Chop off the roots so perhaps a taproot is the only one remaining.
D: Attach strop to rear of your Landrover and drive slowly up the street in the direction that you'd like the tree to fall.
E: When tree is horizontal - walk along it chopping it into the size you need whilst shredding all the bits you don't want.

Nice and simple.

Got my first chainsaw when I traded with a mate a remote control helicopter for a nice new Stihl and a Minidisc player (showing how long I've had one).
In the first week the chainsaw got more use than the helicopter ever did in the first year of ownership. Man maths at its best.

Once you've got the hang of cutting you'll be looking for better sawblades and then you'll get into the hang of sharpening them yourself, then you'll be buying second and third chains to save messing about when cutting down.

The worst that they can do is give you a fine, once they are down that's it.

I never ask about TPO'S ohtherwise you are already guilty, cut first ask questions afte

I have a huge OAK in my garden, if I had asked the L.A. then before you could say jack, there would be a TPO on it, so I asked the Tree Surgeon who advises the L.A. about it and he advised me to just cut it down before asking the L.A. if I really wanted it out of the way.
I cut some huge Maples down,Firs of various descriptions, and other trees as described on this thread, in total 15 trees came down and were logged, in the end I didn't need to touch the OAK but had I needed to then it would have been felled as it is also blocking the growth of 2 other OAKS just behind it.

The only reason I didn't fell the Oak was because of water consumption and drying ratio because of my neighbout house 30 mtrs away, no other reason.
The fine is only £20,000 per tree! I'll check before I cut thanks!

And I'm still alive!

Quite enjoyed it really, my brother and I went about getting 4 of the 5 trees down. One we can't get down without help as it's a tricky one (hangs over the park and is leaning towards the house).

I now have a chainsaw too smile
