Afternoon

We are looking to replace the only non sash window in our house and have just had a quote. The window is approx 1m wide and 2m high. The quote has come in at £1580 + VAT fitted (spiral springs).

Is this reasonable? It's just that it's over twice what I was expecting.....

We were also quote about £1200 for uPVC, but I think we prefer matching the other wood windows in the house.

I'm trying to get other quotes but wanted to check if I am fooling myself.

Cheers

We paid roughly £750 for similar sized sash window on springs. Not sure of fitting cost as we paid for 18 windows to be fitted at the same time.

Windows from www.allanbrothers.co.uk

Very good quality and comes with all the guarantees you want.

All depends on style. Does it have glazing bars? How many panes of glass? Double or single glazed? Hardwood or softwood?

There are a lot of variables smile

Both top and bottom sections are split into three parts vertically. Single glazed (unless double isn't much more). Dunno about the wood.

To be honest I don't know much about windows. We'll be moving end of next year so not fussed about having all the bells and whistles just want all the windows to match.

A bit on the high side, but not that far off. Just had a quote for a double glazed sash window for a grand. Custom made joinery is pricey!

We're about to start a house renovation and have been getting quotes for around 20 sash windows. There appear to be some subtle differences with respect to the mechanism which affect the cost. Also, soft wood windows come in cheaper than hard wood but obviously aren't as resilient. If you don't take care of them we were warned that soft wood might need attention after 5 years.

We're looking at similar sized soft wood for 800 and hardwood for 1200.

Try Howarth. They're softwood but have paint guarantees for ten years, window guarantees for 30. I've just put in an order - think the sash ones from memory were about £650 each. There are restrictions on styles, etc - they're limited. But they work for us!

You could try mock sash windows, look very similar while closed and cheaper. We tried to go for these but planning wouldn't allow!

Do you need to replace, or refurb? We had some crazily expensive quotes for replacement. In the end, the worst ones were refurbed by http://www.ventrolla.co.uk/ for about a third of the quote to replace. Where appropriate, frame replaced, re-glazed, new cord, weight, fittings and so on, plus their draught-proofing thing worked out at about £500 per window. Quite pleased to be fair.

Cheers for all the help.

The window installed at the moment isnt a sash, so we can't go with refurb sadly.

I'll have a look at Howarth. Might sound bad , but I don't mind getting softwood, as I'll not be here for more than 18 months or so.

Even my builder, who's a bit of a stickler, was staggered by the quality of the Howarth windows. He couldn't believe the prices for what you get. I saved about £10K on the windows for our project!

What the reason for spring based rather than weights?

Are you looking at local firms or nationals?

I've not done it, but in due course we will may well be looking for some custom wooden windows to match the remaining original windows of our Edwardian build so I am interested.

Will ask the parents what there front windows where (of the shelf design, custom size, wooden casement windows) a few years ago.

Oh, bloody hell. Browsed in after seeing it on 'whats new' and didn't spot the epic thread revival of the poster above me!

Haha we've all been there!

For what it's worth to anyone still looking for wooden windows, I have used www.woodenwindows.com and been happy with the products and price.
