you know it - the non-setting putty-like stuff that the builder of my house used to bed basins on pedestals. I've replaced the basins and got the bloody stuff on the carpet in the back of the car. Does anyone know how to clean it off.

Wonder Wipes. There's others available but these are by far the best. If you've got some I'd try baby wipes, may work.

Plumbers Mate...
Roll some into a ball and roll over the existing stuff on your carpet.
This is not a serious suggestion, it works on skin and hard surfaces, no idea if it will work on carpet!

Thanks for the tips, but turps substitute has worked a treat. Now I just need an air freshener
