Bought my Barry Hilton piece above from a local fine art gallery, but does anyone have any recommendations for buying art from and supporting local artists? I can't find anything on Google. Also, where do people buy framed photography from? Anyone got any links?
You could try here, and see what you like...

And a couple of friends - you may like their style (worth a free plug anyway wink )

For local art, we have something called Spring Fling where local artists open their studios.
See all sorts of great things

If you're looking for something unique - WSB and motor racing fans....

Sir Stirling Moss and WSB rider Tom Sykes have both drawn tigers which are being auctioned this week to save tigers in the wild.... you can also see the pictures for yourself at the Mall Galleries this week.

Talented indeed, but £300 for a photo!!! For 3 of the photos you could buy a pretty good camera and get a few of your own printed! They will mean far more than a picture taken by someone else. I have a few of my pics on the walls, from around the world. All very special places.

Never understood this sort of negativity towards photography.

It's like saying "Don't buy that Monet, get some board and oils and do it yourself".

My own work sits proudly alongside proper fine art photography: each image has a different meaning to me and are appreciated for different reasons but that does't render the ones I've bought a waste of money.

I suppose its that I cannot paint a picture like Monet, but I can take a pretty good photo myself. And one takes days of work, the other takes a few hours, if not minuets? Then you can print as many as you like...

I bet many photographers wish it was that easy.

We've got a couple of Govinder Nazran prints around the place. I just like the style of them;

Last night at the preview and awards ceremony for Wildlife Artist of the Year, Mark Cawardine made the very good point that, as a photographer it never failed to amuse him when people said "wow, you must have a very good camera", when he would not award a prize that evening to a talented winning artist and say "wow, you must have some very expensive brushes".... or a sculptor and say "wow you must have a fabulous kiln".

If you're interested in popping in to see this amazing exhibition, it is running all week at the Mall Galleries - free entry and everything in the exhibition, is for sale too....

Full exhibition catalogue: http://shop.davidshepherd.org/list.php?search[exhi...

P.S. The winning piece is outstanding - very well deserved and this year's exhibition is absolutely amazing - so many different mediums and the talent is just mind blowing.

The final act might take a fraction of a second but what you're really paying for, in both disciplines, is the lifetime spent honing those skills in order to be able to offer work of that quality.

Love the Simon Griffith bronze and plaster works in that catalogue.
We have a pair of magpies by him that are stunning.
Met him a few times and he is a lovely chap who I would gladly part money with again for his work.

He's fab isn't he, those plaster painted dogs look amazing in the gallery- the catalogue doesn't do them justice really as they are life size... there are 4 of them trotting right through the centre of the exhibition. I'm also a big fan of Adam Binder - the kingfisher is just exquisite and there is a little otter whose paws you just can't resist touching! (unsurprisingly sold within minutes on the preview night).

Video of the exhibition online now http://www.davidshepherd.org/news-events/news/vide...

Well worth a visit this week if you're in town! smile

There is also a 'selected not hung' catalogue here: http://shop.davidshepherd.org/list.php?search[exhi...

Just noticed we have a piece by one of the 6 guest artists as well.
The most fantastic little ceramic fox by Nichola Theakston.
Which had a little accident and is now back with her for some corrective surgery!
Hope to collect when she visits http://www.potfest.co.uk/potfestpark.htm

Which we attend every year, ended up with this exhibition piece last year...

Keep forgetting to look at this thread! Picked these up the other week from a very talented local artist, Julie Dumbarton. She does huge vivid oil paintings that seem to be making a good impression on folk & as she's a customer of mine I though it's about time we got something by her.

Very pleased, & the finishing touch to our recent kitchen extension smile

Seen her exhibit at spring fling before, yes she is very good!
Trawling through her website now, I could pick half a dozen I'd have in a jiffy.

Some close ups thumbup

Having seen what her large ones go for (we had no idea!) I was just pleased she did a series of minis that we could afford at her last exhibition. I actually saw the full size "bluebells" one on FB & went up to look at it but it had sold (not that we could afford it) but when she pointed out this little version of it I thought why not? Each of these are only around 4" square & she was selling them at £75 each-not a bad little way into her work I figured.

Iirc she sold 2 of her large ones that weekend, one was £26k & the other £30k+ eek
