That looks interesting and giving good control on an individual basis if not however an excuse to have the boiler working longer on occasion!
There's also this system, though a UK start up vs. Honeywell...

Yes, the boiler may be firing for longer but should only be powering the rads that need it so you would hope less overall.

They look like a combination of something like the House Tech and Tado solutions already mentioned. Hence the price tags!
I would guess it doesn't matter if the boiler is running for one or ten radiators, it's still buring oil or whatever fuel you use.

Might prove expensive unless monitored carefully unless you still had your heating on a timer and then it does have the ability to remotely adjust individual rooms which is pretty cool.

I see the Honeywell system can only be purchased through an installer. 11 radiators is quoted at £1329 plus fitting. Ouch!

Yes, but if only one rad is calling for heat then the system gets up to temp much more quickly as you're only heating that one room and not all rooms which might have been previously trying to heat (e.g. Why heat up the sitting room when you're getting ready to go to work in the morning? ). So long as the boiler isn't cycling unnecessarily of course.

I'm sure they take a lot of tweaking to get the best from them, like any system would.

Interesting turn of events - Google buys Nest for $3.2 billion. Definitely shows this is a sector that is going to grow a lot in the near future

Or that Google has considerable more money than common sense! Of course the valuation may not be quite what it seems since Google already owned a portion of them and it's not necessarily cash.

But an interesting move nevertheless.

That's put me off Nest. They'll have a camera in there before you know it and be taking nude shots of me in the shower.

It's logical though...with saturated markets in PCs, TVs, tablets, laptops and phones, home automation is an obvious area for growth. Almost no one has internet linked/smart heating, lighting, alarms etc

It's just cemented my initial interest in Nest. I'll be getting it when it launches here in the UK now (I'm very much an 'Android' guy!).

Smart move by Google imo.

Yes, up to a point. It will be really interesting to see how all of this goes because there is an overkill point, a point where it all just gets a bit silly.

I'm a techie, a software developer by background, now I run a few software companies, never happier that sat around looking at what we can do, how our software can evolve. But you quickly become aware that a lot of techie dreams don't make it, Gartner do a great thing analysis called the hype cycle

That sums it up well. Not so many years ago I was being told that my fridge would be internet enabled, it would be logging stuff as i put it in and took it out and reordering for me. Has it happened? No.

With heating it's certainly useful that you can switch it on or off remotely - well I find that useful a few times a year. It coming on and going off depending on how close I am to home? Maybe. A lot of other dreams? Hmmm

Interesting to see what gets through the peak of inflated expectations through the trough of disillusionment into the slope of enlightenment - many things fall by the side as that progresses.

Glad I found this thread!

Just ordered Tado on a rental basis as I like the idea of being able to change if we don't get on with it.

I spoke with them to clarify the inclusion of the remote temperature sensor (it's included) and I think it will fit well with our at home/out of the house patterns.

Free installation offer ends today too, so it cost me £90 all in.

Having followed this thread, read a few reviews online and looked longly at the Nest thermostat (must get out more), I'm another one that has just ordered a Tado. Taking advantage of the free installation too. The key selling point? As nice as the Nest is, we wanted flexibility to move the thermostat around the house.

The Salus thermostat can be moved around the house.

First impressions are it simply does what is says on the box, and the thermostat doesn't need mains power which is a bonus.

The thermostat is also a good looking gadget!

yes, I see they give you their own router. Salus do something similar and give you a small wireless adapter that plugs into your existing router, providing connectivity back to their management system

..this is obviously the easiest way to get connected versus relying on the end user setting up DNS or port forwarding on their own router wink

I've got a potterton model too. I've ordered a Tado and I believe you just leave the potterton on and the tado the. Controls when it's on/off as your thermostat would. It's only cost me £90 for the first year. I can exit at any time and keep the equipment, I just lose the location based element to it.

Salus does the same, heating and hot water and is £160 to buy outright (no charges per year).
