Best Wifi enabled thermostat

I'm considering getting a Nest thermostat for a new extension which will have underfloor heating and be separated by a door from elsewhere (and therefore be a separate zone to the rest of the house). Can I retain my existing stat / timer for the main house and just use Nest for the single zone, or would I be better off using two Nest stats, one per zone? To be honest I don't mind paying out for the new bit of the house, but over £350 for two units makes me wince a little!
A quick look on the Nest site and elsewhere hasn't revealed much - any ideas? Also being very shallow I prefer the way Nest looks as it will be on display in a living area, but if it's a no-go would any of the other competitors be able to work like this?

Mine is a bit finicky but normally a reboot sorts it. A hard reboot of the extension kit I mean.
Latterly though I've found the emergency stat on the unvented cylinder is throwing itself randomly shutting the whole thing down!
Also the battery contacts in my thermostat have gone... They want me to soldier them. Guess that's easier than sending it back.

Only had "ours" (in my daughters house) for just under a year, but it's been fine, not even dropping the wifi connection (to BT HomeHub3).kapiteinlangzaam said:

FWIW, I've had mine around a year now, both the TADO and extension kit. No problems.

I'm in the market for a new themostat and programmer as mine is very basic (rotary dial themostat in the hall, 2 channel 1 day programmer). 4 bed home, well insulated, all rads have TRV valves apart from hallway which is where the themostat resides. System boiler with circuits for CH/HW (via 3 position valve) and a HW storage tank with its own themostat.
I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while and with plans to decorate the hallway SWMBO has set a deadline for me to sort the heating controls out and make good of any holes/wiring beforehand I would value the collective experience of PH'ers to steer me on the right path...
From my research (feel free to correct me if I am wrong in understanding):
New Hive mk2 - looks nice (passed the SWMBO test) and the new controller looks to have all the controls you would want need including boost for CH/HW, but cannot be certain if is has optimum start for its scheduling or if it learns the warmup/cool down characteristics of the home to reduce unwanted heating. Doesn't seem to use weather information. Geofencing/location sounded good until I read that it just prompts you to manually turn the heating off via the phone app which kinda disappoints as a very useful feature to me. It can manage your HW too. Would probably be my preference if it had the learning facilities and the geofencing was upgraded to have automation.
Tado v2 - Minimalist looks (passed the SWMBO test), mainly designed to use your smartphone for control. Has optimimum start and weather compensation in its heating logic which sounds like it could save me money (read a few reviews where apparently it would start heating too early-does it work well?), can also control hot water with the extension box which would replace my old programmer. Geofencing//location sounds useful if it works as well as they imply on the marketing blurb (two of us in the house with IOS devices), both leave for work together at the same time and return similar times but that can vary with work. This seems to be the choice of those who want the most features but is it reliable? My current front runner.
Nest - looks nice (very apple), but presently doesn't control hot water
would still need a new programmer for HW which is a pain as not integrated into the app control system. Auto away probably wouldnt work where it is located as not enough people in the home and would probably think we are away of an evening when in the living room. Currently discounted.
Honeywell Evohome - too much cost and effort to install at this point in time but would consider in the future when we extend the house and need to do substantial work on the whole heating system giving opportunity to re-plumb and fully zone all rooms.

They look good but the protrusion on the thermostat rear would turn it into a much larger job than I hoped for - location is opposite side of the wall to the living room lighting switch so potential for hassle if sinking a new 35mm box into the wall.dickymint said:

Regarding Evohome, why would you need to re-plumb? I've recently installed and it retro-fits to existing system i.e receivers attach to the relevant 3 way valve. Agree that the cost is high and I definitely think the suitably of the system is lifestyle dependant.
