Nest is actually proving to have an issue - the stat does not seem to read temperature accurately. I worked from home today, and the stat was reading 20 degrees centigrade indoors. It was colder - more like 16 degrees according to a thermometer I used to check.

So it will save you energy by never switching on...

Apparently a fairly wide problem, and not one that they have managed to fix...

We were deciding between the Tado and Evohome and decided to go for the Tado as although the Evohome is more customisable we have two thermostats and Tado now offer mutli zoning so we can control up and down independently although not each individual room.

We work unpredictable hours and so the potential advantage of not having to worry about programs and cancelling them (I also don't always have constant access to my phone at work) is apealling as is the obvious cost saving.

Nest Heatlink and Thermostat (on stand) were professionally installed this morning. All working fine when the engineer left.

About 7pm tonight i noticed the thermostat showing a H1 error code. I went to check the Heatlink and found that a broom had fallen over and the end was resting on the reset button. The light was flashing green/yellow. I removed the broom and the light remained green/yellow.

I've tried to reconnect the thermostat to the Heatlink but it will not connect. I've power cycled the Heatlink. I've reset to default by holding the button for 20 seconds.

The thermostat appears to be stuck in a connection loop - it'll sit for 5-10 mins trying to connect before it fails and shows the failed connection screen. The only options then are to try to reconnect, which fails again, or to look at the Tech Data.

any advice?

I've just picked up a Nest myself. Decided to do away with hot water controls and just using an immersion heater for it during the summer so the Nest on its own is fine. Haven't installed it yet, but had a poke in the box, I don't get what that heat link box does? is it just a transformer for 230 - 12v with the wifi?

With regards to external sensors, in the States I'm using Ecobee3 which is fantastic, each unit comes with a little external sensor (little bee!) and a stand you activate them in front of the thermostat and it pairs it, each thermostat can have several paired to it, and you can put them in different rooms around the house. I believe its launching in the UK about now, and is well worth a look.
Heat link is the relay box that cognacs to the heating system - it must be connected to the heating wiring. The nest itself is low voltage and merely instructs the heat link to turn heating on/off. The heat link box also provides a 12v supply for the nest and can be linked to the stat as a wired connection.

Do a full reset of the stat and the heat link. Take off the heat link cover and there will be a pairing code with a little QR matrix code. Use that to force a manual pairing.

I've been looking at a new control system for our house. Based on this thread and a fair bit of research, the Evohome looks the best option for us as we have a largish house with only no zoning and only two of us in it. I was looking to use the connected TRV'S to create virtual zones so we don't heat unused space.

Is this still the best solution for us or has any new product come to the market recently? Ideally we would have the zoning of evohome with the geolocation of tado, don't know of a system that can do that though.

Cheers

On the subject of Next thermostat/heatlink pairing. Mine had been working fine for a year or more but recently had to re-pair as we've had a new boiler fitted.

Spent ages and they just wouldn't pair, even manually, even when a foot away from each other.

I called Nest support at 6pm. They answered immediately and talked me through a load of troubleshooting steps.

Turns out it was Sonos causing enough interference to disrupt the pairing, even thought it all works fine once paired. Apparently, wireless interference is one of the main culprits when pairing does't work. So switch off everything wireless!

BTW, Nest is quite fun on the Watch.

Tado is a great system and I have been very happy with it for the last year or so. They have tweeted that they are bringing out smart radiator valves which I believe will be available sometime next year which will make the perfect setup for me. https://twitter.com/tado/status/639749886288789504

A bit of further research this evening, and I've found that Evohome now supports IFTTT, so I can at least programme my own presence detection.smile

New app coming end of October i've been informed for the Salus IT500. Redefined (the current one is a little bit Windows 3.1) and nice new feature that knows when you disappear x miles from home it switches it off and when you come x miles from home switches on to save you forgetting it.

How does this work? I've got the evohome system already, what else would I need?

Don't know yet, I'll work it out when I get the bits together. But I'd start with Google and the search term "Evohome" and "IFTTT" wink.

How do you get on with Evohome?

I see Siemens has invested $17.1m in Tado - good news for future development.

Only just started to expand it really. I bought the base unit and internet gateway earlier this year as the boilers original wireless relay failed. Hadn't gone any further than that until last month since it started getting colder. Have fitted 5 rad valves so far, what it has highlighted is that some of my valves aren't shutting completely so I'll have to replace those. I do like being able to heat different rooms at different times plus being able to switch on and off away from home is another good feature.

Thanks for posting this. I've been having what sounds like the same problem - Nest won't pair, even when in the same room and even just a few feet away from the controller. Haven't had time to contact Nest support, but I've got Sonos as well, and my Sonos bridge is in the next room to the controlle. So I'll try turning Sonos off and see what happens.

I've gone from looking at hacking something with a Raspberry Pi, to fitting a Nest thermostat, now I've heard of the Hive system and you guys are talking about Tados and EvohomeFQ400s etc.

It's just a smallish 2 floor semi detached with a combi boiler and no thermostat currently fitted. No zoning required.

Quite tempted by the Hive at the moment as the thermostat unit is battery powered, while Nest requires a wire running to it or a £30 stand.

V3 of nest just launched in the UK. Brings hot water control.

I really want to jump to nest from tado as I'm a huge google geek, but I just can't see what it brings over tado. IT doesn't even have proper geolocation

I'm considering changing my Nest for a Honeywell Evo system.

The Nest is nice, however the outages of their back-end systems have annoyed me slightly. I also would like to have different zones set up. We'll also have under floor heating in the new extension, so ideally I'd like to sort that out at some point too.

It looks like Google hasn't done much with Nest, much like when they purchased Waze. It's still going (and growing?) but hasn't really been Googilfied.

Having had the pleasure of being taken over by a large American multi-national recently, I can respect them for taking the hands off approach hehe
