Thanks. Did you install yourself?Mine was fitted by the fitter that replaced my boiler but it is a simple job, and like you, didn't have an existing wired roomstat. I wouldn't have used a wired one anyway as you can find the optimum place for a wifi one.

I went for the Tado system because at the time it was far superior to Nest. It does look like Nest has really improved since and definitely looks nicer!

I've had Nest since the first day it was available in the UK and while good, it's hardly changed at all in all that time. I actually went for Nest over tado because at the time it was far superior to Tado! Now I'm questioning my decision as while other systems get new hardware (trv's etc) Nest seems to have stagnated, unless you're interested in toy cameras.Mine was fitted by the fitter that replaced my boiler but it is a simple job, and like you, didn't have an existing wired roomstat. Yep. I've DIY installed two.
The first was an old combi with a 2nd gen Nest - really easy, just a simple switch. The second was a 3rd gen Nest with hot water control into a Y-Plan system. That took a little bit of head scratching and tracing of wires through the wire-spaghetti in the three junction boxes in our airing cupboard (some of the wires changed colour 4 times along their length) but I got there and it all worked first time.
I put the heat link box where a mechanical timer used to live in our airing cupboard:
The length of telephone cable is supplying 12v to the thermostat that I installed in the same place as the old Honeywell stat:
I'll ditch the surround when we eventually decorate.

The Hive products are also reduced today:

£125 delivered for heating/hot water version is pretty good.

I'm amazed the Nest has that USB port so close to the mains connections. Is there normally a cover that goes on top of the screw terminals?
Nope. The cover goes over the entire unit and would prevent the USB port from being used. Not that I've had to use it, it isn't even mentioned in the installation guide so I assume it's only used for resurrecting bricked heat links, hopefully with the power isolated first!Looking at getting Hive at home.
We live in a 3 storey townhouse with 2 thermostats, and I guess a combo boiler (no idea how I'd know, but its controlled from 1 control panel, and house is 8 years old).
What exactly do I need, as Currys Black Friday sale has the option of:
HIVE Active Heating with Professional Installation £199.99
HIVE Active Heating Multizone £99.99
Total £299.98
Doesn't include fitting for the 2nd thermostat as far as i can see.
British Gas is £350 fitted.

Water heating is tacked on the side using a fixed schedule when, if it was really eco friendly, it would be linked to the central heating ('oh, I'm heating the rads I'll just see if the water needs heating too') to save energy. Water heating reported in energy usage either which makes overall usage misleading. The minimum on time for the central heating is 1 hour (I'm often up and out in half that so that wastes more energy). So again, energy wasting rather than energy saving.
Oh, and Auto Away is broken big time since the update that changed Away mode to Eco. It starts heating on the next schedule change rather than detecting you're away. You're going to be pretty pissed if you come back from a fortnight in Spain to find its been heating the house twice a day for the duration.
It looks nice but its a really expensive dumb time clock right now. I'll be pricing up a Honeywell Evohome this weekend.
Before you consider Hive. We booked for the installation about 2 weeks ago. We were supposed to have it fitted on Thursday but the engineer cancelled - I found this out when I called them and asked where the engineer was. They then booked me in for afternoon slot that same day - still didn't turn up! I'm really annoyed with them. They took our money quickly enough. I am at this time waiting to hear from their customer service dept. I will probably tell them to stick it and buy the Nest.
Just fitted Tado in our house. Two zones, two thermostats.
I am as unskilled in DIY as you can get but it was very easy and saved me the ridiculous £90 fitting charge that they offer.
Once you get the thermostats, you register them on the website and you then you put in your current thermostat make/model plus your boiler make/model and then you get the wiring instructions, but they didn't have instructions for my combo on their system which sent me into a bit of a panic as I wasn't sure what to do.
However, Tado sent me an email within 5 minutes saying they were working on it, I sent them a picture of the current thermostat wiring and a couple of hours later I had two PDF's completely tailored for my set up and it took me less than 5 minutes to fit each one. Works perfectly.
The smart scheduling works brilliantly.

You need the Extension Kit to control hot water. I've no idea if it is as easy to fit or if it is any good. We've got a Combi boiler and wired thermostats so no need for it.
Likewise, but I suspect if it works in the same manner as the heating control then it will be set and forget. I rate our Tado system very highly and it just works.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
