Pretty annoyed with Tado here at the moment - I sent an email to support to ask if I could upgrade my v1 thermostat to the new one as I've experienced a few disconnection and apparent charging issues with the original, plus I've wanted manual controls from the start. I've been on board with them since the beginning, having ordered in Dec 2013 & receiving over a month later. The response I got was;
"Unfortunately we do not offer the option to upgrade to the new smart thermostat. The reason for that is that with the new hardware also the terms and conditions as well as the contract has changed. Therefore, a new contract would need to be created.

Should you decide that you would prefer to have the new smart thermostat you would need to cancel your current contract, return the system to us and place a new order."

How short-sighted is that? Agreeing to a new contract and T&Cs when I receive the new stat is not a problem - I would be carrying on the service next year anyway. So to get the new version I'd have to not pay for my current renewal and order a new version in the meantime then send the old one back. It all sounds a bit backwards to me.

I do wonder how much gets lost in translation between UK customers and Tado. I've emailed them a similar question because as a fairly early adopter like yourself (Jan for me) I'd like to upgrade. If the response is a little patchy then I'll call them.

Why do you need to return the unit though, as a renter I thought you kept it regardless?

Edit: It may be worth holding off upgrading just now, they appear to be releasing multiroom thermostats soon.

Just reading their facebook page and they are being torn a new one by existing customers who have no ability to upgrade.

Their replies indicate they will do something so I'd definitely hold off for now.

Latest email back after I expressed my displeasure (politely) at their option...

"We are currently trying to find a solution for customers like you who have been supporting us from the beginning. Therefore, we would kindly ask you for some patience and of course will come back to you as soon as we found a satisfying solution.

Just ordered a Tado to go with my new boiler. Was debating whether to or not as the kitchen now has underfloor heating with it's own thermostat and timer, but ultimately the lure of another gadget was too much to resist.

Will report back on ease of fitting and effectiveness smile

I'm wondering if we can get Zwave into ours somehow... control it that way.

Do any of the early Tado adopters have a copy of the t's & c's from when we ordered? I ordered in Jan of this year and seem to recall that we could cancel at any point AND keep the hardware. Am I correct?

Alrighty then, Ive got my Bosch / NeFit Easy installed and running.

It was very, very easy to do. I had to change the backing plate for the thermostat and install a communication module for my boiler. 30mins physical work and some wire splicing. Once the thermostat was plugged in all I had to do is input the WiFi password and sync it to our phones / tablets.

Great smile

Only thing left to do is sort a backing surround to cover up the unpainted section of wall.

The Sw looks to be very good indeed, with an easy to use clock program, learning functions, proximity operation etc. Hot water can be set to clock program or automatic. Its got all the usual holiday functions and you can of course remote access to warm the house up before you return.

There are lots of extra functions (e.g. gas monitor) planned for release this year.

Total cost was â?¬200 for the thermostat and â?¬35 for the comms module. We absolutely cane our gas in the winter, so hoping this will pay itself back rather quickly yes

Is that the same as the Worcester Bosch wave you can get over here? Looks very similar.
Looks like this only works with Worcester and Greenstar boilers?? Can't find anywhere where it says it can control water and two zones of heating?

I believe that is the case although I don't know about at any time, not if you expect any money back anyway! The location and possibly also (the ability to program via a timer) service stops but you keep the hardware in manual mode only.

There was no minimum term on the contract, but you paid 12 months up front (I think 12 anyway). You should be entitled to a refund, without the subscription you would be left with just an on-off switch for the heating I think.

I think they were confident that you wouldn't want to lose the service so the risk of the generous terms was minimal. Though hopefully they'll realise that there'll be lots of cancelled contracts if they don't sort out an upgrade option.

Had this back from Tado support today:

Hi Joe,

I can offer you to exchange the current system you have with the new version. Please note that with the new version the 12 month contract will start again. Furthermore, The new terms and conditions exclude the right to cancel on a monthly basis, thus having a minimum duration of 12 months. With your specific heating setup you would also require the extension kit. The following pricing model resolves:

Smart Thermostat: 4.99 GBP p.m
+
Extension Kit: 2.99 GBP
=
Total: 7.98 GBP p.m.

The remaining monthly fees of your current rental contract that are not used up yet will of course be deducted from that amount.

The old hardware is to be returned to the following address:

I've asked them in return:

- What was my equivalent monthly rate before
- Will you send the unit in advance so I'm not without heating/hotwater
- Are you still doing the same "try before you buy rental deal"

I was just going to say that on their Facebook site they've conceded a free upgrade in exchange for a 12 month lock-in. Seems fair enough to me.

How long does the TADO take to arrive?

Ordered Sunday, but no dispatch notification yet.

Mine was very fast, but then that was the old one. Wouldn't be surprised if they are flooded.

Particularly when the 12 months looks to be under £100...

Not sure what you get in the UK - but a quick Google seems to suggest 'YES'.

Makes sense I suppose, as its Bosch NeFIT here, and Bosch Worcester in the UK.

If you can go out and buy it off the shelf in the UK, then I can heartily recommend it yes
I've got a valiant boiler - will this work?
