I need a new mattress about a year ago and bought a Silent Night memory foam one from Costo. Was OK for a few months and is now worse than then years old one that it replaced and is killing my back each night, which is a pain, because I thought I paid out on a decent make.

Was speaking to my Dad about this and he bought a Rest Assured 2000 pocket spring mattress that he really likes for about £260 for a king size, a year or so ago.
Any thoughts on the different styles and brands or recommendations ? Around similar money would be ideal.

Everyone is different so really you need to try yourself to see what works.

One piece of advice though - don't scrimp on price. You spend 8 hours a day, every day on this thing - thats a third of your life, so be willing to spend if it;s worth it. We sent nearly a grand on our mattress (memory foam jobbie) and it's as good as new despite being 7 years old and having been shipped halfway across the world.

Agree totally, don't go cheap on a mattress. At sub £300 I'm not surprised that it's gone rubbish, I'd be looking at spending double if not triple that on a double/ king size.

Wbought the most expensive Ikea one about five years ago and it's still fine - and I weight about 120kg. I hate Ikea in general but their beds are 6'6 as standard which is nice.

Vi-sprung

Alot more expensive, but definitely worth it. Try John Lewis in the sales.

We just bought a new one, proper budget one at £125. It's.. actually not bad. Possibly because the last one was 17 years old so in comparison, a wooden pallet would have felt better.

This. We tried loads of matresses before settling on a Kahmed spring/memory foam/gel matress. It cost us nearly a grand for a matress alone. Well worth it.

As jimithy says, you spend 8 hours a day on it.

Agree on Vi-Spring. Worth every penny.

Also try phoning stockists and see if they are selling off ex-dem mattresses (seriously).

There's an orthopaedic sleep centre in Sheffield where they did out how you sleep etc. then recommend you a mattress based on whih supports your sleeping position best.

Before buying have a good read on this site, there's loads of info about mattress construction. Before we bought from there we had had several Hypnos mattresses over about 25 years .

We have a king size Hypnos, was about £800 if I remember right. Was in a sale and I think end of line too.
6 months on we love it. Only issue is, when you rotate it, as it weighs a ton.

Have slept on memory foam ones and found they get too hot for my liking.

Rest Assured is part of the Silent Night Brands.

I also bought a Silent Night mattress to replace my 15+ year old one. It was fine for the first 18 months or so, and then started to go bad.

I wrote to them, and they offered me a new mattress for £48, but it wasn't as "good" as the one we'd bought.

So I've decided to decline their offer, and will buy a non-Silent Night Brand (which also includes Lay-e Zee) mattress.

Not sure what to go for yet though, so I'm watching this thread with interest (not sure if my budget stretches to £1000+ though - unless there was an exceptional warranty with it).

I had the same problem, and without rambling on about never buying from Sleepmasters, I tried many mattresses. They all subsided and gave me back ache - I was incredulous that despite all man's wizardry, he cannot make a mattress that does not subside. The eventual answer was a latex mattress from www.yanismattresses.co.uk/browse/mattresses/1/natu...

I went for an Abaca organic mattress, a Chester 1400 with latex came out about £2000, bloody comfy and should last a good few years.

My grandmother always said to buy the most expensive mattress you could afford. Hers lasted a good 20 years.

Just try all the mattresses you can.

I ended up spending 2500 on a Harrison king size divan.

After I tried it , nothing ever came close .

have the warren Evans memory foam here for over 5 years. has been great- both of Us are inclined to back issues, and returning to it after staying away is bliss. was about £800 iirc.

have seen the cheap mem foam but don't know what to make of them, its such a difficult thing to gauge isn't it?
