Hypnos pocket sprung. You can find the hotel-type contract ones online that are the same as domestic but not so pretty but much cheaper. The more springs the better and usually if you have a bad back the counter-intuitively you need a firm one.
Any chance you can post a couple of links as I always sleep really well When I'm in a hotel bed & would like to change my John lewis mattress.
How about here, they use Hypnos beds

You could book a night at a premier inn to try their beds and if you like it they are available to buy. http://www.premierinn.com/en/why/Buy_our_bed.html

The Premier Inn link above is for Hypnos mattresses and the prices don't seem bad.

We have a kingsize Tempur and I hate the bloody thing. It is definitely too hot and a thinner duvet doesn't help when you have a sticky back from lying on the foam.

I also find it doesn't support anywhere near as evenly as claimed - if I sleep on my front I end up with a sore back as it sags under the heaviest part i.e. the body goes down with the head and feet higher up.

I spend a lot of time travelling and staying in business hotels so will be changing to a good pocket sprung mattress soon.

It's all good paying for the rolls royce of mattresse , but the issue for me, and a lot of others will be knowing the correct type of mattress to purchase.

I can't really go to sleep overnight in the shop to really know if it's suitable, and laying down on it for 10 mins will never be enough to know I won't wake up the following morning with a back pain.

Any tips?
Yup. Buy a Vi-Spring

This may be too late, but hopefully someone will see it in the future. I was reliably informed that companies like Dreams spec their own mattresses from mattress manufacturers that are inly available in their own stores, and one of the tricks they like to use is to add more springs. A decent mattress uses up to 2000 pocket springs, but what the companies like Dreams do is order beds with 2–3,000 springs, essentially taking a manufacturer-spec bed and getting the manufacturer to put smaller springs within the larger springs to up the spring count with no real benefit other than the impressive number and exclusivity. They also then charge a lot more for them.

For example: I saw a mattress in Dreams that I liked, was looking up reviews and discovered that it was a mattress that the manufacturer offered with 2000 springs (instead of (300) for £1500 less than Dreams were asking for. I purchased the mattress from mattressman.co.uk and haven't looked back. Very comfortable. I also bought a latex pillow, which stays cool like feathers, but stays plump like memory foam (without being overly firm).

A lot of places have trial period where you can return it if you're not happy. Or you could buy from Costco where you can return it for ever.

With Vi-Spring you're paying a lot (even after the usual 50% discount) for the name. We bought from here John Ryan: http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk/ and they use Vi-Spring as a reference point and aim to produce a comparable mattress for half the discounted price.

Seems like a good alternative. Made in Britain too, which is excellent.

I got very fed up with the process and just said bks to it, we'll buy the dearest there is - must be best as everyone (and several posters in this thread do it too) says you get what you pay for.

They actually talked us down a couple of levels and said we just didn't need the most expensive stuff.

One thing I would say is that even the one we ended up with weighs an absolute ton - turning it over is not a trivial task.

Just spent the morning in John Lewis doing the whole routine - such a chore, but worth it!

I went in thinking I'd buy a Vi-Spring as usual but am here to report I'm abandoning the fold.

I always found VS a bit 'tippy' in that the sides are quite soft and as you approach the edge the feel like you are going to roll out. The chap I was talking too nodded knowingly and explained that VS are a bit like that and other manufacturers incorporate a reinforced band around the edge to avoid this.

Trying the VS next to the other manufacturers I was left in little doubt which was best for me. Went with John Lewis Natural Collection Fleece Wool 7000 Mattress:

Make sure you know what size of mattress you need before you gorolleyes we ordered a king size mattress from dreams for our lovely Italian designer bed that we bought 10 years ago only we didn't realise it was a euro king size.

Our daughter is now well chuffed with her amazing raised bed with built in desk and sofa bed as they couldn't supply one suitable laugh

Any recommendation about a mattress, we brought a bed and mattress from john Lewis last February and my back is killing me, I have to stuff cushions under my back to give my back some support.

I know the moral about you get what you pay for……. But any sale offers out there that might suit a king size bed, I have back problems and also weigh in at about 17st
See my post on page 1.
In the end I purchased this in a king size, delivered yesterday, first night's sleep last night, big difference, it supports my back very well

That's the mattress (although the 4000 version) that I had problems with, and have now replaced with

Yeah. At 17st and with back problems I think your requirements will differ from most to be fair.

I also went for a Yanis matress - a Pocket 2000 foam matress (although the non-memory foam one, which they seem to have split into 4 different products now).

My girlfriend really loved it, and it's as good as it was when I bought it (August 2013).

The thing that really swayed it for me was that they can make custom sizes, so I went for just-slightly-smaller-than-super-king size of 170x200, since the hole in between the wardrobes was 175mm wide. Which meant I also made my own bed frame - probably slightly overengineered though (but doesn't wobble when moved)!

The only complaint is that I can't get bed sheets that fit exactly (not off the shelf!), so I buy super-king size and some clips that stop the corners from pulling up.

Glad to have been of help smile

The only downside of latex is that it's damn heavy (and I found the zipped cover rather loose) - but the main thing - comfort - is still good after a couple of years. Latex seems to have just the right amount of resilience IMHO, and doesn't lose it.

Apparently VS's thinking is based on super-king size and the even tension across the whole bed is considered a good thing.

The outfit I linked to (who use VS as a reference) highlight that they put a double row of higher tension springs around the perimeter of the mattress to stop that roll-off feeling and it also means it's not a problem to sit on the edge of the bed.

I've had the Artisan naturals mattress from these for about a month now and its the best nights sleep I have had in ages. When you order the bed they ring you up for your weight and your partners then recommend a suitable firmness, if you don't like it then they will either replace or refund free of charge within 30 days and you also get a 10 year guarantee.

Yep. Or better still a Travelodge bed. I ended up staying in a Travelodge last month and their bed was one of the most comfortable mattresses I've tried. Place was quite new so the mattress hadn't been hammered by gangbangers.

Their whole estate has been done over the last couple of years, I read.
