If that were nearer £1.2m, I'd be seriously looking at it as a country hgouse for purchase equally with a friend. We're looking for a country house to share (we both want to keep our places in London), and for weekends, a nearby station that goes to Liverpool Street Station (near my office) in under 2.5 hours sounds good.

It is a beautiful property. My Defender moored in the garage on a trickle charger for when I get there? I think so.
Test them out with an offer :-) what's the worst that can happen.

if it's been on the market a long time then you are in the driving seat.
Just called them and arranged a viewing this weekend! Mt parents have a place in Brancaster, which is on the coast and not a million miles away from this place. Only issue with this beautiful Rectory is that it's not really that close to the coast, and 1+m can get you quite a bit in Norfolk (once away from the north coast).

Did the viewing happen?????

That's lovely, I'd have that smile

I wonder how much it will actually sell for. I am told that many places like this change hands for significantly less than the advertised price.

I keep coming back to the chateaux on sites like Groupe Mercure and Sifex. Absolutely everyone says that it's a lunatic idea to buy one. There is a good reason that they stay on the market for years. But I just can't get the idea out of my head. Frankly, I'd rather my obituary read "he passed away in his chateau, which had fallen into disrepair" than "he passed away in his Barratt home, which he kept in good order".
awesome place and I can safely say I agree with AmitG on his thought process

Plus you can buy a load of those electric sparking machines and things that spin around and set up a laboratory in the basement for "experiments."

If it'll do you a favour, I'll take it off your hands. Say 650k?

your not far off,

1. hasnt been redecorated in probally 35/40 years
2. kitchen 22 years old, falling apart
3. wiring and plumbing ok
4. correct
5. The buildings in the garden shots are yours - 2 bed cottage and a triple garage stable and store.

Its been on the market for a few months, most houses that size in somerset / devon take about 12-18 months to sell. I would expect it to go for 7 figures just got to sit it out and wait.

Or chuck £400k at it in interior design and landscaping, rebuild the garaging and stables, and quciken the sale, but you wont make your money back,

No pictures of the triple garage neither is it on the floor plan. Is it a ramshackle wooden affair - can't think why else the agent would have ignored it.

p.s. DFL?

You are joking, right? Private sector, surely.

After my 30 years in the Armed Forces I'm still 'a little off' buying million-plus houses with my lump sum. Times have rather changed chum.

Especially if they bought a terrace in zone 3 for the price of a couple of new Ford Zephyrs, which now buys 3 Phantoms...

Ah right. Don't know about too far from the beach it's too far from London too. Hants or maybe Dorset would be my limit for a weekend, not deepest Somerset that's nearly Devon! laugh

Well I know all that, and am not complaining about my deal, but an 80-odd k lump sum does not a 7-figure house purchase.

Times may have changed, but that was still an impressive achievement.

Even more so that they were adopting a 10 year old at the time...

.

I just had a chat with my dad. Where did yours buy?

His first was £2800, in 1962. Outskirts of Derby. 2 new graduates, 95% mortgage. 130 quid odd deposit. (!!)

In 1973 he paid £22,000. Detached, but newish build 3 bed, nowt special. Enfield way.

£500 sounds a steal.
