What's the catch here?

Great house, 17 acres, walled garden, cute coach house, carriage circle, etc.

In Surrey.

Seems like a steal, what am I missing? On the Gatwick flightpath? Next door to a paedophile drug addict ukip voter rehab centre?

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

I saw that a couple of weeks ago. Looks nice.

Shame about the motorway and Gatwick. Hmm - complain to whoever it is you complain to about race tracks about the noise and get Gatwick closed down wink
iirc there is a racetrack / stock car track not far away either....

Apart from the view that does nothing for me whatsoever. The main living space looks like someone has just put some second hand furniture in a warehouse.
Agreed, even the pool doesn't exactly look like a nice place to be.
The thing with buying one of the more out-there Grand Designs houses is that they're nearly all some architect's wet dream, nearly all use 'cutting edge' building techniques and many of them are built by the owner, on a shoestring.

Inevitably something will fail, leak or fall off - who the hell do you go to for advice and how many builders will be sufficiently knowledgeable of glue-lam-geodesic-horsehair construction techniques to be able to work on your house? And in this case how many of those will be in the Lake District? How would you even begin to survey a house like this before you shell out your millions?

It really is a stunning house in the flesh.
Friend or extended family? wink

The school bus used to collect one of the sons from outside the entrance.
I had no idea what was behind those gates!

Darren
I suspect the son was of the old owner, can't remember his name, my friend only has a daughter. The house suffered a fire a few years ago and was totally redone.

Like I said, the pictures make it look quite 'interesting' (being polite) but looks far better in the flesh.

Yes his wife did design it!

And yes, the estate agent hasn't been entirely great, he's pretty cheesed off with them, to the point they had a viewing on the bank holiday that didn't turn up, but the viewers did let F&C know, just they didn't pass on the message.

Ah OK. I'm talking 12-15 years ago.
Also, you have the same family name, so assumed there to be a connection. There is a large "Holmes" clan around this area wink

I had no idea there was fire, though!

That was on Grand Designs about 5 years ago.

I remember the build, the stone section in the centre was a thermal store. They lived in a 2 bed cottage which was demolished as they built the new house IIRC.

IIRC the budget was something like £300k... If they do get anything like £2.3m that's a very decent profit.

An easier than usual security workaround walkaround for uninvited 'guests'.

From the outside I expected a bit more character internally. It looks like one of those art gallery shops inside.
