Gorgeous house. Love the grounds, walled garden and cottages.
The interior, however, seems to have been done by a committee of Colleen Rooney, an app entitled 'What would an oligarch do?' and several bowls of crack cocaine.

Jeez, that was a hotel until recently, slightly shabby round the edges but full of Northumbrian character - stayed there for my step-dad's 80th birthday celebrations which were all held there..Gorgeous house. Love the grounds, walled garden and cottages.

It is all spectacular, especially the kitchen area and that conservatory (which is bigger than a lot of flats)
In my eyes that is probably the loveliest house on this whole thread. It is all spectacular, especially the kitchen area and that conservatory (which is bigger than a lot of flats)

I actually don't know, but you do get a lot of house for the money- that £2 million investment works out at £80k per flat. It isn't a home county, but it does have excellent transport links (1 hour to London via train, minutes from the M1 etc). I think the town itself is quite good; not picturesque though- it isn't a 'beautiful' place, but it's not a st hole either (like many big towns there are those run down terraced housing areas just north of the town centre).I think Northampton (the nicer bits, like where I live ) is due a London commuter price rise as Milton Keynes becomes more expensive (which is a place I wouldn't live in anyway). We bought our house a year ago and a week ago a similar house sold for £40k more than we paid (next to a busy road though, whereas I'm in a very quiet cul-de-sac), so it might already be happening.

I took a punt on a house in a nice village a shortish drive to Wellingborough a few years back, convinced it would see some London weighting equity appreciation. My own view was that the one hour radius circled from London to the regions extended in almost every other direction and Northampton/Wellingborough station both had a decent rail service to the smoke and a similar time commute from the SE. My native Southampton had an abundance of city commuters (I was one) paying the same £6k for a season ticket and car parking cheaper on an annual ticket.I know Northants did try to position itself as a commuter county at one point with some PR work to that effect but it never seems to have gained traction. Certainly I haven't seen much evidence of anything meaningful in terms of price rises but it surprises me to this day how far your money goes. I'd have thought for the non-massive money city workers on <£100k it would be a good shout for the family home when the Mrs wants sprogs and a 4/5 bed place is achievable with an hour commute. Few areas that can offer that sort of size within an hour of town for £300k - £350k.
Anyway, I digress, I was wrong it seems.
There are a lot of low paid jobs in that area and few companies that have a plethora of highly paid employees and it does seem it keeps prices very low aside from the odd pocket of old wealth in certain villages, the majority of which seems to be West of the M1 intersecting the county. I would personally say Northampton itself is run down and not the nicest of the towns (no disrespect intended, just a personal view) but some of the villages in the area are quite beautiful and it is well placed in terms of accessibility to both North and South and served well by road and rail.

The M1 is very close meaning plenty of London is only an hours drive and there is a mainline train station that'll get you into London in an hour too.
The town itself has some really nice buildings including the guildhall and the largest market square in Europe, shops aplenty and lots of investment.
I looked at a place on Collingtree Park, one of the best addresses, right on the 18th green of the golf course with a Virgin Active health club on a private estate. It was 3500 sq. ft and immaculate. Listed at £775,000. In Milton Keynes it would have been over a million.
As another poster said, Northampton prices will, indeed are, increasing.
Those flats though really aren't the nicest, whereas there are conversions of old shoe factory's that wouldn't look out of place in Shoreditch that go for £200,000.

You're absolutely right of course - I was thinking of somewhere else which looks very similar (Embleton Hall).. (hated by Spurs, loved by Arsenal, married to an interior designer who is the daughter of a major housebuilder)
I don't think that interior is a good advert for her skills! probably inherited the 'quality' of work gene from her dad!

Now if you look at average house prices as a multiple of average salaries you can see how the increase might start to happen. Until recently Milton Keynes was very affordable, but now to get a decent 3 bed house in a good area you are looking at almost £300k, or a lot more in certain areas. In the grand scheme of things that's not silly money, but it is not achievable for most first time buyers or those on average wages. Look at Northampton area and similar houses are £250k, which for a couple earning £70k between them would be affordable.I know Northants did try to position itself as a commuter county at one point with some PR work to that effect but it never seems to have gained traction. One poster mentioned Collingtree Park. This is 5 minutes from my house, and as nice as it is you can hear the M1 and the A45 from the golf course- that would drive me nuts!!

This was the one I looked at, a fairly standard design for the estate. Not prawn but they are very nice houses. As said, 5 minutes to the M1 North or Southbound, on a golf course and with a Virgin Health Club 2 minutes walk away. Even had the obligatory oversize hot tub.One poster mentioned Collingtree Park. I can't say I noticed the road noise but as I say it was decent value compared to MK, Bedford etc.
The villages around there such as Flore, Olney, Wollaston really are nice too.
Even Earl Spencer is there at Althorp so it can't be that bad.
I went to Woburn too ( near MK) where prices are at least 50% higher.

Normally I am no fan of the usual houses on the St Georges Hill estate but this I really love. It appeals to my New England sensibilities

I played at the golf course there a few weeks ago - you have to drive past quite a few special houses on the way - not sure this one would be at the top of my list though, the entrance hall is pretty average for a house of this size!http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

that seems overall a nice balance of modern and yet characterful... not in all rooms mind, some are a bit much, but you could redress that relatively easily. Like it.http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...
Expensive, and cleverly photographed to avoid a built up area, but stunning all the same.
