See these mental Colorado homes, when there's THAT much space around them, what's stopping folk buying a few acres (or Ha's!) and building their own?
It must be less money to do it that way, surely?
They do. There is at least one plot. I've seen quite a few over the years.

Just found the perfect place in Montana

We have recently sold a house around 15 miles away and have been looking in area for our next home.

There is a substantial price difference between even North and South Nottinghamshire never mind over the border in Derbyshire where prices seem very expensive in comparison.

Our new house in Derbyshire (we hope) is probably a third in size but is priced 50% more than the one we have just sold.

We have put the difference down to the usual factors, schooling and employment. Plus there is usually nothing surrounding you but cabbage fields in North Notts!
Are those figures correct? Do you mean a third smaller?

Originally $50m but dropped to $35. 5m in 2012.

Might have gone back up just on market increases.

I grew up just outside Newark, and there really is an awful lot of nothing nearby.

Finding an employer that will pay enough to support a house of that size will be tricky. Sorting turnips doesn't pay enough.

When we left London and moved to Devon, for fun I looked to see what our budget would buy us. What we spent on a nice 3 bedroom semi, would have bought us a slightly crumbly but decent enough farmhouse, a few outbuildings, a wee bit of land, and a pool.

You are rather stuck on the Island, you can't build a bridge to drive off as under local laws that would allow public access to the island and beaches.

I think if I could afford the island I could afford a speedboat or helicopter!

Funny, that place does nothing for me. I preferred the disgusting obscenity of that disney-esque new build recreation of a chateau a couple of pages back. That being said, living in the middle of nowhere in Colorado would kill me, no matter what the house (palace).

The first one seems ridiculously cheap?
I'm not familiar with the area but it does like look a lot of property for the money...
No idea why but Lincolnshire/ north Nottinghamshire is cheap. Those are fantastic little villages some really great property there. Not sure why cheap perhaps too rural nowt much there but fields.
Hmm, cheap because middle of nowhere. I spent my teen years living in Westwoodside, a connecting village to Haxey. 15 miles to Doncaster, 15 miles to Shorpe (I went to college there, 1 gallon of petrol return each time..). Sod all to do unless you're a 'young farmer' type. Even the landscape is boring. Bleak in the winter, and all the roads around there are deathtraps due to the land being drained peat bogs. I saw many cars go into ditches due to ice (as in watched it happen, not just the results). Much rather live near Brigg (other side of Shorpe), or further SW towards Bawtry.

$30 million being stickered on it HERE.

It's been on the market for many years (at least since the economic crash), I'm very surprised it hasn't sold. No idea how busy the airport is, but perhaps being under the flight path is off-putting? scratchchin

And then there is the West Coast.....
