So i still haven't completed!

Just got an email from my solicitor giving a potential date of next week. But then he's gone home and isn't contactable. So useful.

So theoretically exchanging tomorrow redface Though somewhat depends on money transfers. Friday seems a bad day to do this!

Potential completion within the next few weeks it seems.

Is there anything i need to ensure i do now? What should i check when i get keys? (i will be changing all the locks as soon as possible).

Why wouldn't you change the locks? Anyone could have a key!

In this particular case, when viewing the house with the seller, they stated that half the street have the keys!

So i'm back to not really knowing what's happening. It's a long chain, and the people at the other end of the chain had different dates for exchange/completion than what everyone else agreed too... I've started to be a little harder with this now, and if people can't make certain dates i want to know why, as it's gone on for quite a long time now, and comms between everyone seems so very bad frown

I still don't really understand why all this is so complicated to sort out! Buying a house shouldn't be a difficult process!

After having several exchange/completion dates that have been moved (i think 5 times now?) we are now stepping back a little. We have one person in the chain who seems to have issues getting finances in place, and are basically confirming they're ok with dates, then at the very last moment (eg. half way through exchange day), saying they can't make it. So i'm taking back my money from the solicitor, and we're going to wait for confirmation from everyone they're ready, then talk about dates. This has happened a few times already, and people haven't really been very honest.

I don't understand it all really. Everyone in the chain is just buying normal houses, so from my position it doesn't seem like it should be taking months and months to sort out.

The entire situation is incredibly frustrating now. The longer it goes on the greater chance of collapse of the chain. If it goes on much longer then my mortgage offer will expire!

I take it it's not usually this difficult?!

So, to summarise, events are taking much longer than hoped and people are beginning to lose faith in each other, are becoming unnecessarily obstructive and feel other parties are lying/misleading.

Sounds fairly normal to me.

As Tony Blair once didn;t say; Communication, communication, communication. I should probably throw an education into that mantra as well as it would certainly help.
I don't really get it. I was in a position to exchange 2 months ago!

I've exchanged now. Getting keys in a couple of weeks.

I'm spending the time now doing some planning and buying bits and pieces i'll need (eg. painting kit!). This is going to be an expensive few months biggrin

Given the fact i have nothing, it's almost tempting to get professional painters in, the difference probably wouldn't be all that much given how much kit i'll need to get. Though maybe that's taking some of the fun out of the first house!

Well done and congrats. Is that 3.5 months from offer accepted to exchange? Seems quite a long time - any reason?
One person in the chain was having money issues it seems, and wasn't communicating it to anyone. They would agree to dates, then change their mind on the day. VERY annoying, and stressful.

I was ready to exchange in April (eg. mortgage offer, everything signed, money waiting...). I am the first time buyer at the bottom of the chain. I don't really understand how it took people so long to be ready!

Got to hand my notice in on my flat later (i've lived here for a lot of years!). Kind of sad!

Now told they're not going to be out until 6pm. I think they're having a laugh.

18:30 now...
I have a key, so am going in at that time. Anything left is going out in the garden (there's a thunderstorm now wink).

I am incredibly annoyed. If i was actually moving today i would have been even worse on the phone calls i've had to make to people.

...and in.

Needs a very good clean, and removal of all the rubbish they've hidden! and some bookcases were hiding stuff, ha. The fun now starts. Doesn't really look so bad though, it's ~100yr old terrace, so was never going to be perfect!

What do i do about things like electric/gas/water/phone? They're all still connected i think, so what happens with those now i've moved in?
