Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a glass veranda over my decking in the back garden. Just a roof structure with open sides, something like the below. I've googled loads of companies and had some surveys, but they are all coming back horifically expensive.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas or recommendations for any decent companies that won't charge the earth? I'm not after anything overly fancy or top end. But budget won't quite stretch to the 15k some of these companies are asking! redface

Have you spoken to any trusted builders you might know? It doesn't on the face of it look like the sort of structure I'd think would need a specialist company. If it were for my home I'd speak to a couple of builders I've previously used. Just a thought.

Bookmarked.

I can't help you, but interested to know how you get on as renewing our existing veranda is on my list of jobs.

Tuin do a few, I've not bought a glass one, but I'm very pleased with the wood one I have from them.

Structural engineer to design an I-beam and post frame, engineering place to produce the meccano set, and then add your choice of conservatory kit roof and single glazing.

Actually, scrub my last post - these do look very good value, provided you can get 'em glazed with glass.

built this last summer. It does double up as a carport over the winter. Panels are just what you'd fit on a conservatory. Cost me just over £500 for the roof and I ordered an extra panel and fittings by mistake. Wood cost me about £150. Had to fit extra posts at the front as needed more height and was the easiest way. Since have got some outdoor decor in there which makes it look much less like a carport.

We went through the same exercise last year & after a lot of googling, I came across a company called 123V, who installed our veranda for us.

We didn't pay anything like 5 figures for our 4mx4m veranda.

The location of our veranda makes photos of the whole installation a bit tricky — but it's very similar to the one in this photo on their website.

Am looking at much the same - probably staying away from the "nationwide" companies that advertise in national newspapers is a good start. There are some real "crocodiles" out there!

Thank you.

How easy is it keep roof clean and clear?

Also guessing it would cost a lot more for one or two large pieces of glass rather than rows.

We're currently researching our options for keeping it clean.

No idea. However, I suspect that there's a good reason for it having been designed with rows of glass supported by aluminium cross-members — probably to do with the strength of the structure.

How handy are you at DIY?

I built my own a couple of years ago (with help from a carpenter mate for some of the awkward compound angle cuts). It is built from a combination of 4x4 posts, 6x2 beams and 4x2 beams along with a lot of coach bolts and timber tite screws. Approx size is 4.5m x 3.5m. It took a couple of weekends to build at quite a leisurely pace.

I sourced all of the roofing parts from a company called LIV supplies online and they delivered in a couple of days. I'll dig out some photos later

Here are a few pictures of mine - I have realised that its bigger than I original said, the actual size is 4.8m x 4.3m.

Planning (Sketchup)

During Build

The original plan was not to have any legs on the shorter side, but whilst building we decided to add two along this edge for a bit of extra support. We also added some tension wires in a triangle between the sides and the front edge, These were purchased from a guy who makes yacht rigging and have worked brilliantly, a couple of years ago there was well over a foot of snow on the roof and there were no issues until it started to melt, slid down and ripped one of the gutters off!

Since those pictures were taken the fence along one edge has been painted in a white fence paint (Ronseal National Trust colours I think) and some bamboo fencing has been fixed between the top of the fence and the lower edge of the roof. I have also installed a load of LED Christmas tree lights along the roof trusses linked to a PIR so it lights up at night if we are in the garden.
