this one

Ideally something quick-drying. But then also somewhat weatherproof (doesn't have to be perfect). I'm guessing emulsion will not last at all. But gloss paint is a nightmare and takes 3 weeks to dry. Ideas?

Superdec is good, as is Dulux Trade Weathershield. It's water based, quick drying, comes in satin or gloss and can be mixed to colours.

Any reason why not to use Cuprinol "Shades" they make it in numerous colours and you can order samplers for a quid on their web site. I like it...

currently undercoating with normal dulux undercoat and then are going to use gloss paint on top. Some pictures of the 'shades' type wood stains etc showed that the wood grain still showed through easily ie looked a bit like a fence panel which wasn't ideal. We want an actual painted finish (we decided). Current progress with grey undercoat:

Superdec is self priming, water based and opaque.
I'd not use gloss on that, use a satin based exterior paint. Preferably one that is microporous so it breathes it will last far longer.

Am I right in thinking that Sadolin Suoperdec is opaque and will completely cover any dark knots in the wood ?

I dunno about the paint, but it won't stop the knots from bleeding and coming through the paint.

You'll need to use a knotting solution for them to stop them bleeding. Or you may find a suitable primer that will work for covering knots and also prime all the wood. Normally Zinsser BIN would be fine, but I think it's not the best option for exterior work.
