Quite normal to run 24hrs to keep the water circulating, on ours this is the only way to keep the chlorine dose correct as it needs mixing in the water. I check my levels daily with check strips to make sure the level is ok.
If you have a big pump you may not need to run all the time but we do on ours.

I hope you showered before you did (I'm here all week).

Our pump runs 8 hours a day, I check all of the chemicals on a sunday morning and normally give it a vacuum at the same time, there should be no need to check the chemicals daily if you have it balanced right in the first place, you don't say what size your pool is, but its a complete waste to have the pump running 24 hours a day, if this is the case and it needs to run for that amount of time I would say the pump is not sized correctly to the pool

I presume our runs 24/7 although with recent council cuts I wouldn't be surprised if they turn it off and don't bother with chemicals.

As the saying goes,if in doubt, filter.
You should be checking your levels every other day as it is affected by so many factors,sunlight,filtering,debris,3 in 1 tablets, rain.
There is a lot of useful information on the French Entrée forum about pools.

Completely agree with this. I run mine 8 hours per day in summer and 6 in 'winter' (no real winter in FL). 22,000 galls moved by a 1.5hp pump through a cartridge filter and solar heater.

Easy to install one of these in the feed to the pump motor:

A thermostatically controlled flow-valve is also a worthwhile addition if you are altering the plumbing. This device regulates, heating, suction, drain and sweep - all automatically:

In an ideal world, you want to be filtering the water in the pool twice each day. So, to set up your system, you'll need to calculate the turnover rate for your pool. If the turnover was say 4 hours, I would run the pool for two periods of four hours each day. You can time one of these to take advantage of any cheap rate electricity depending on your tariff.

Running costs will vary widely depending on the time of year and the size of pool. I use less than £50 of chlorine in a season. The main cost in this country is heating the water. I roughly estimate, based on hours that the boiler runs for, that it takes 20+ litres of oil to get it up to a nice temp (30) from 'ambient' temp of around 20 degrees C in the summer. Then if the weather stays nice I might be able to just heat it for a few hours a day to maintain it at that temp. If you are happy to swim in an unheated pool of 20 degrees or so then the running costs would be very low!

I would agree that mine is under pumped/filtered as the only way to keep the water healthy seems to be to keep it running all the time, I will wait until it needs attention and then look at upgrading the set up then.
At least the sun has made an appearance so the kids can spend a few hours in it for a change!!

What size is the pool, and what pump/filter combo do you have? (Pump make and HP rating plus filter diameter)

I'm in the industry, so any time you need anything, I can do some special PH pricing wink
