Boys and toys! biggrin A ride on wouldn't cope with 4.5 acres. That rig cuts it in about 2.5-3 hours when the grass is short and it can go over rough ground.

My stiga cuts 3 and a bit acres of formal lawn in 1hr 20mins, wouldn't do paddocks though, but would easily cope with 4.5 acres of fomal.

We had a quad and logic finishing mower, great in theory crap in practice, nightmare around trees especially in the orchard, and wasn't a great finish. for formal. And flail was better on paddocks

As a mater of interest, why do you cut such a large area?

My neighbour uses his ride on for his paddocks but it takes him hours. It's horses for courses - I'm pretty happy with the flail and it is good enough for what I need. Hopefully, when the stables are built and my wife's horses come I will only need to top rather than cut or at least not do so much cutting!

The fine flails do a surprisingly neat job. I use it on the back lawn but you are right, edges need to be done with a small mower or brush cutter.

My wife has horses but they aren't at the house yet as we are waiting for stables to be built. The fields were a mess when we bought it in February. Cutting has kept the weeds such as docks and nettles down and will help stop them re-seeding. I cut it once a fortnight at the moment so it isn't too bad. It was nearly three feet high in April!

Understood. Were it not for the horses, I'd be thinking about wild flower meadows &/or haylage. Life is too short to mow grass!

I started off with a cheapish one but it died very quickly. Then bought a Honda which is now about 7 years old. It needs a service every year but it's really excellent - highly recommended. Does just over an acre in around an hour, including collection.
