Balking at the quotes I was given for removing my old leaky garage roof I realised that I could buy the proper PPE for two (who says romance is dead) plus the plastic to cover it plus associated bits and bobs for under £200. My local dump will take 4 sheets a month as long as it's double wrapped so disposal can be done in one month plus 1 day. Removal of 8 3m sheets plus wrapping has taken a day but I've been VERY careful and having seen some so-called professionals at it on a neighbours place previously I reckon there's less chance of me having left dust etc on the beams.

So, well done me...

But the purpose of the post is that this all got me wondering- what do the council do with it when I hand it off to them. Does it get buried in a very deep hole?

Well I suppose incineration is out!

It's asbestos not nuclear waste.

Thought you needed a licence to remove it?

You go to jail for touching it here.

It should get buried in landfill in a specially dug hole and then covered. Nothing special really, it's just a good way to make a lot of extra money for the landfill owner although there is masses of paperwork to go with it. I used to carry asbestos and a lot of the time it was tipped on the same face as all the rest of the rubbish.
If you have space and the will to do it you could bury it in your garden.

Where's here? I think you only need to be licensed if your offering asbestos removal as a commercial service.

Have space but not the will...

Thanks for the replies- just idle curiosity on my part. Funny that there's all the hysteria around removal and wrapping etc and then the other end of the disposal chain seems much more orthodox.

There are different types of asbestos, some are more dangerous than others. The precautions for removing and disposing it are there because it's nasty stuff. Try googling Asbestosis.

The last lot I removed from Newcastle went to Middlesbrough, I think there are only a small number of sites that take asbestos.Low risk stuff such as roof sheets can be legally removed by anyone if they take basic precautions, high risk has to be removed by licensed contractors .

Done that. Care taken. Probably the only time in my life that I've spent so much in the morning only to dump it all later in the day.

But how many people have died afer touching their asbestos garage roof? That's the point. And as chemistry students we all had asbestos tiles to put our bunsen burners on.

Touching the garage roof isn't a problem, it's probably one of the less dangerous materials. Breaking, drilling etc and breathing in fibres that you can't see wouldn't be good for you. According to HSE figures, there's about 2,000 asbestos related deaths a year in the UK.

Some types of asbestos products (such as yours) are so low risk, do not require a licence and you can legally DIY.

You forgot and then "Build houses on it" smile

Well you can try http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spodden_Valley_asbe...

Seems the locals didn't want houses built on "contaminated" land wanted to continue walking their dogs and using it for recreational purposes smile

For the record Simon Danzcuk really is a self promoting gobste politician rolleyes no more than the rest of them I suppose rolleyes
