We've just moved house, and our old flat had a built in fan oven and microwave combo as well as a normal oven.

We now don't have a microwave, and I'm pondering if it is worth getting a countertop convection fan assisted jobby, or if I should just go normal microwave. We did by a max size 72l oven, so we do have a fair amount of oven space, but that having been said, I did use the upper oven when doing a roast dinner occasioanlly in the old place.

Anyone got any recommendations either way?

In my opinion, no!

Its partly my fault for never digging out and reading the manual admitidly but in our last place we have a boshe oven and paid about £1,300 for a combi microwave thinking it would give us a double oven as and when needed.

I tried to use it as an oven/grill twice in a year, both times it didnt work like an oven so i gave up and just used the main one when stuff was finished.

biggest waste of money for US (the important bit) ever.

New house just has a plain microwave.

Yes, I use it all the time as my main oven.

I found that I had to watch what I was buying. Some (most) seem to utilize the grill as the heating source for the oven with an added fan to distribute the heat, I had one of these, it was rubbish. I made sure the next one had a separate element for the oven inside the back panel along with the fan and also the normal top grill.

Why not get yourself one of the new generation Halogen cookers, wife bought one about 6 months ago and they are very good, little mess and much cheaper to run than microwave and the food does not go cold as fast as using a microwave.

I use my old Panasonic more this way now as I do a microwave...

It's been great and still works as well as it did when new around 13 years ago

Use it for warming bread etc, all on a timer so can't forget stuff like in the proper oven.

Cooks Jacket potatoes superbly too due to a special in built program

Thanks guys, have plumped for a Samsung Combo Convection/Grill/Microwave model MC28H5013AK (snappy) from John Lewis. Hopefully it'll be OK! Liked the dough rising feature in particular!
