A ceiling light went in our bedroom so I changed the bulb but I can't seem to get it working again.

Traditional bulb - nothing
Halogen bulb - nothing
Megaman CFL - nothing
Philips CFL - strobing

The switch is a dimmer but the position doesn't make any difference to the results.

Any ideas?

Try the original 'blown' bulb somewhere else in the house, that would suggest its the switch.

As above its the dimmer, possibly a cheap one. Having said that I am seeing more knackered dimmers now Halogen bulbs are more common. A Halogen blowing is more likely to have a brief large surge that could blow a dimmer.

I replaced our dimmer that had gone at the same time as fitting a new halogen main light for the living room. It all worked but as you turned up the brightness, the light would start humming loudly. Abit perturbed by this so removed the dimmer and fitted a standard switch. We've a dimmable lamp in the room anyway so tend to have that on.

Thanks all. I shall replace the dimmer with a normal switch.
