Hi,
At the bottom of my garden i have the railway and with it 150metres in length of 45degree banking thats full to bursting of thick brambles.
To the point that its pushing my fence over and has grown under the shed roof.
Ive tried a brushcutter for the past 3 years in the winter but every year it grows back thicker and faster.

Ive heard about farming weed killer and railway weed killer but i have no idea what they are actually called.

I can bring my dog around, everything he pees on dies, my garden looks like the Gobi desert. Some brambles should only need a few days.

Try and buy some Glyphso (its got 260mg/l glphosphate - I think) whilst conventional weedkillers have perhaps 10mg/l

Glyphosate.

The concentration of the, err, concentrate is immaterial; it's what you spray it on at that counts. And probably the formulation (rest of the chemicals) as well. Officially you can't use professional products, but in reality what you can blag from the farmer pal and spray over yourself is up to you.

Get down asda or aldis and buy lpads of salt.

I have a large are of patio.

Weeds etc were a nightbare with the need to pressure wash twice a year. Hated it.

Now i sprinkle salt everywhere ever couple of months. Moss and weed free.

Reckon it will do for the brambles as well

Standard answer on here - 360 glyphosate

Available on Ebay circa £15 for 1L or £35 for 5L

I bought 5L and have used 1L this year on approx 2 acres.

It's the strongest available to the public and to be fair it works pretty well - has killed large bramble, bracken and nettle patches.

Put a bit of diesel on it, nothing will grow there for some time, anything that is growing will die.

Councils used to do it around sign and lamp posts a lot.

It'll still grow back if you kill it with weedkiller. In my experience, you need to cut it and keep cutting - you may do it 4 or 5 times the first year, 2 or 3 the second, then maybe 1 or 2 after that, but it'll go in the end. I did a large orchard this way.....

My experiience is the opposite - it you cut it - it keeps coming back.

360 kills the root - it's dead.

What you need is a chainsaw, a bloody big chainsaw. (You don't really but it's a great excuse to buy one that your missus will believe. smile)

Part of your problem is that you aren't replacing it with anything. So you kill and clear the brambles and make a perfect area for new brambles to grow in, is it your land or does it belong to the railway?

I cleared an acre of brambles and then sprayed with SBK every so often; it kills broad leafed plants but not grass so you get left with something you can mow. I sprayed for the first couple of years with decreasing frequency and haven't had to spray for about four years now so I guess they've all gone!
