Getting some quotes in to re-carpet the upstairs, and have noticed that Cloud 9 underlay seems to be a tad more expensive than other makes. We have this downstairs, and whilst I'm pleased with it (as far as underlay goes, not really something I think about to be honest), is it really worth the extra or are you just paying for the name?

Anyone carpet fitters on here in Northampton want to come round and give me a quote?

There are different types of cloud 9 , I use the best, in my house and buy to lets. Carpetright want 310 a metre, you can buy it online from here for a lot less! Its thick, you may have to cut doors down!

IIRC the better the underlay, the longer your carpet will last.

Take a look on Ebay / Google it really isn't expensive if you source it yourself.

When I asked for a quote excluding the underlay the Carpet shop asked if I was buying it online and then matched the price
(IIRC it was 1/3 of the price they were asking)

Get all our underlay from here. A lot cheaper and quick delivery.

+1

We had all of our carpets replaced in our house this time last year(4 bedrooms, landing & stairs) and saved a fortune on underlay (Cloud 9) from them compared to our local carpet shops.

I need new carpets and underlay for a flat. I thought the cloud 9 was the best, but looking at the site, why is rubber waffle underlay eg http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/rubber_waffle_carpet_... more expensive in many cases? Is it better? In what way?

By the way is there any disadvantage to having thick 11mm underlay? Will carpets be crazily high? They will be adjoining a low laminate flooring, will this be a problem. This is to go in a flat - ideally I want something to minimise noise for the downstairs neighbours, at the moment I'm thinking Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm. Minimising noise from walking is my primary objective. The carpets that go in will be cheap though! (just to be contrary)

thanks

I've used the underlay from here on my last 2 houses:
http://www.lcw-underlay.com

I would use it again, thick, heavy, does what its supposed to do.

The sponge type underlay (Cloud 9 etc) gives more underfoot so is nicer to walk on IME than rubber.

Good rubber is far heavier, will dull noise better and last longer.

Laminate will be a problem to the downstairs neighbours so what underlay is under the carpet probably isn't an issue.

I have 25mm carpet and 11mm Cloud 9 - I have fitted a 12mm ply strip under the doorbars to prevent the carpet being crushed down.

I suppose technically it could be a trip hazard but no one has had an issue thus far.

Anyone here got 11m Cloud 9 underlay? Would this be too thick for most people, or is it the most comfortable?

I have some Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm fitted in my home office and it's fine - although I'm not sure what problems you would have with it?

I think only an issue if it butts up to a low wooden floor

I have the Cloud 9 11mm Underlay in a few rooms and it feels great underfoot. Only thing is that it is all fairly new (2 years old max) so shall see on longevity.

Only thing I had to do was remove 1/2" off the bottom of the doors, but the old carpet was rather flat and the underlay almost non existent.

I had the whole of my previous house fitted with 11mm Cumulus from Tradepriced when it was renovated in 2010 / 2011
I moved out 2 weeks ago and the carpets still felt new to walk on, even next to the front door.

Some of that will be down to the quality of carpet used but some will be the underlay for sure.
I'll be using it in the new house as and when I change carpets.
